Infrared Controller Device " Lionel"

I just added my MTH operating crossing flasher with sound. I plan on using the Lionel 153IR Controller. Does this device work pretty well or are there some tricks I should know about prior to installing it?

I have two Lionel infrared controllers and they have never missed a beat. Worked perfect from day one. Just follow the instructions.

There are two different types of Lionel 153IR controllers with the exact same Lionel part number. The earlier 153IR starts a timer when it detects a train. The timer will continue and time out regardless of whether the train is still present or not. The second 153IR will trigger when a train enters and remain triggered until the train passes regardless of the elapsed time. Externally they are visually identical. There is a visual difference if you open the electrical disconnect compartment door but I don’t remember what the difference is.

If you already have the unit, you can power it up and activate it with your hand. Leave your hand in place and see if the timer times out while your hand is in front of the detector. If it times out with your hand in front of the detector, you have the earlier type. If you have to remove your hand to drop the signal, you have the second type.

Renovo,

The only time I had trouble with 153IRs was when I connected a pair to 450 signal bridge. The sensitivity can’t be set low enough to prevent them form tripping each other, or a train passing on one track would also trip the 153IR on the other track. Otherwise it is a good piece.

You can also install them with out the base;

That is a great idea!!! [tup]

Between 3 different layouts, I’ve had 6 in operation (3 are inside of tunnels). Never had a problem with any. Joe

Thanks guys I ran down to Tire Hill and bought two of them. These work great though I must be getting old because the connections are so small.[tup]

I love the signal with the sound. It sure makes things easy after you all the track down.

Thanks Buckeye!

It is actually very easy and no soldering involved!

I have 2 for my block lights and they work great. the hardest part was setting the timming so that when the caboose cleared the bridge the light would switch to green (that’s with the loco set at a realistic speed) but other than that not a single miss!

As buckeye said, that is a great idea. I have a few of the MTH units on my layout and do not like the looks of them, think I will try the Lionel with your mod.

Thanks,
