INSURING YOUR MODEL TRAINS

since most homeowner’s insurance fall short when insuring collections like we have, i am considering getting a special policy to cover my model railroad stuff.

so far i have only talked directly with a company in Maryland named Collectibles Insurance Services. their rates seem reasonable, especially when compared to my regular insurance company. also their protection sounds like it is more comprehensive.

have any of you had experience with this company or any other specialty insurer that you would recommend? i would particularly like to know your experiences with their claim service if any

Thank you,

Frank, Your insurance policy (Homeowner’s) probably has “internal limits” on personal property. I URGE you to check your policy for these limitations. Usually, you can list ANYTHING above and beyond these internal limits on a “Separate Schedule”, (e.g. jewelery, collectibles, and other valuables). It may be cheaper or it may not, but if you choose to use your current policy, photos of all things that are on a separate schedule are MANDATORY. Keep them in a place separate from your home, (e.g. safe deposit box) just in case of a mishap.
