What sort of intermodal trains do the UP and BNSF run. and how many tracks ar there in a intermodal yard?
The BNSF run well cars with cargo containers and trailer trains on flats and spines. Part of the time though here (Missouri) they are mixed together with each other. Sometimes you might also see a few mixed in with freight trains. They are ususally led by a CW44-8 or SD70mac but will have about anything on the roster helping pull them (gp-38-2) or even pool power. The intermodal yards are all sizes and I have seen cargo containers unloaded on sidings with mobile cranes. FRED

Does the UP use its SD90MACs on their trains.
The Pittsburgh Intermodal Terminal owned by Norfolk Southern has two tracks approximately 3600’ long for TOFC & COFC handling and storage.There is also three support tracks for car storage of approximately 3500’ length.The entire facility of driveways,parking and repair buildings covers about 1 mile x 1/2 mile of property.About half of the lot is devoted to parking trailers,chassis, & stacking containers.By the way,one bit of trivia about Pittsburgh’s tracks;#2 track’s western 200’ can’t be reached by the packer to handle trailers or containers due to the way the adjacent running track & lot are laid out.Pittsburgh handles 80,000 lifts a year,(and still growing!),while the largest ramps like Chicago do about 400,000!!! I don’t know how many tracks Chicago has,but I believe it’s at least eight working tracks.
would a yard of 13 tracks be enough. Also how big is 1 mileX1/2 mile be in N scale.
