Im guessing some of you have heard of Iron Horse Park “Guilfords Headquarters”. Located in Billerica Mass.
And for those who havent i will explain. Iron horse park was one of the greatest places too spot train action. They had a 9 stall engine house with overhead cranes and a small freight yard behind it. They had paintshops and everything you could ever imagine in this industrial park. yesterday, my uncle came and picked me up and drove up there. The whole way up he was telling me all these great things too expect when we got there and how he used too work there. This was going too be the day of my life! When we got there it was insane as too what we saw. There was abandoned buildings and graffiti all over and smashed windows and tipped over MBTA buses. Everything was a mess. This huge 24/7 running industrial park went from a train spotters paradise too a train spotters worst nightmare. I got a few pictures of this great dissapointment.
You should look at some of the aerial photos of the facility on some of the various mapping services on the internet. Most of it looks like an abandoned warehouse facility in the bad part of a city. This is in stark contrast to the suburban surroundings of the town it’s located in – . I work in this town and most of it doesn’t even look remotely like this.
This has been a place where locos, etc. went to die for many years. I’ve seen countless photos of old heaps waiting for the cutting torch. Too bad they didn’t spend as much time taking down the old buildings as they did cutting apart old locos.
It’s hard to believe, but Guilford (now Pam Am) is headquartered in Billerica. Practically right in your back yard! Not that I’m any history expert, but it was a big B&M repair/storage/dead line yard. Look it up on MapQuest and switch to the new ‘aerial image’. It’s off Iron Horse Park, which is off High St. Not too far north of the junction of 3A & 129. It’s currently a shell of what it once was.
I work over on the other side of Route 3, off Concord road.
