I am planning on installing a Proto 1 soundboard in to a non-MTH locomotive but I don’t want to drill any holes in the Chassy. What I would like to know is can I turn the volume all the way up and then remove the volume control pot. You can adjust the sound from the transformer so I was thinking maybe you can install it without it. Any help would be appreciated very much.
As far as removing the pot it really doesn’t matter whether the volume is set on hi or low. Once you take the pot out of the system the speaker will be getting full power.
If memory is accurate, haven’t looked at my PS-1 operator’s manuals for awhile, the only sound control you have from the transformer is on/off. Much the same as doing resets, locking the e-unit in a direction, squeaking breaks, etc.
You can most likely leave the volume pot out entirely, I know for PS/2 installations, you can simply short the two pins connected to the CW end of the pot and the wiper to set maximum volume, then adjust it with the remote. The PS/1 appears to have the same kind of volume control using the reset sequences from the transformer.
