Increasingly I see CP power on CN trains… are CN and CP operating some trains jointly or is CP in a power surplus situation and leasing power to its rival?
Over the years all the carriers have found it to their own benefit to keep the original power on run-through movements destined to a connecting carrier. Just changing crews and moving on minimizes terminal congestion that would be occasioned by the time required to perform a terminal air test that would be necessary for the change of power. In the present day you are likely to see any carriers power on any other carriers property.
I am seeing photos on the web of CN and CP power appearing together all over the country. It could be run through trains, as Balt describes, or HPH (horse power hours) arrangements, where when one RR is short of power in one part of the country they pay it back by letting their engines be used by the other company in a different part of the country. From what I have read, the only actual lease arrangement EHH has made is with BNSF, but nobody seems to know how long the term is.
And to confuse the issue even further, on the Powder River to Prince Rupert coal trains through Calgary (BNSF-CP-CN route), an apparent CPR GE may technically be a “BNSF” locomotive, leased from CP. I have seen power from all three roads on those trains, in various combinations.
A note from down here on the BNSF Southern Transcon:
Until recently I had not seen any CP Power, at all. Now in the last month I have seen three CP GE’s on BNSF Grain Shuttles. One west and two East bounds. All were running second out on the head ends. But more and more I’m seeing pairs of NS Power leading, and no BNSF units on those trains( one’s I saw were not DPU’d ) . Used to see some FerroMex Units on East bounds, but have not seen any of those in a while.
And as for CSX Saw one unit about a couple of months ago, but running third out.
You must have a bit of fortune teller in you. In today’s Newswire there is a story about CP announcing their new Chairman of the Board is Gary Colter. He is a Chartered Accountant who had worked for 30 years at KPMG Canada.
