I just received my latest fleaBay purchase, a PW 2-6-2 steamer. It is missing the number plates so I don’t know if it is a 224 or 1666. Is there a way to tell? It has the ornamental whistle and 2-piece bell, rounded cab floor, Baldwin disc wheels, short draw bar, no smoke. Came with a 2466WX tender.
It’s a little beat up, but nothing bent or broken. Engine is also missing drive gear and bell, and I have not tried to test it yet. Tender is missing all screws and needs to be rewired, but otherwise shell is in decent shape. Should be a fun restoration project considering I only paid $50 including shipping.
Sounds like a 224. Baldwin drivers are the proof. On the prewar version, if you look at the top of the boiler you will see a phillips head screw which fits into a “dimple”. A 1666 will not have the phillips head screw visible. Obviously this probably wasn’t try of all production, but it is true on my current fleet.
It has rollers and Baldwin drivers, so I guess that makes it a 224. It’s a post-war tender, so I assume a post-war engine. Doesn’t the rounded cab floor indicate post-war? I thought pre-war and early post-war had a square cab floor?
Next question, I see somebody on the Bay has complete drive rod set for a 2026. Will this work on the 224?
Rollers make it a 224 for sure. Check out the Library at Olsen’s Toys site for parts lists for the 224 and 2026. If the drive rod parts have the same part number on both engines then they fit either.
I just checked the Olsen’s Library and none of pieces (side rod, drive rod, valve gear) matches between the 224 and 2026. You can check your self to see the differences.
