Jeffrey´s Track Side Diner - November, 2019 - This Month Visiting Georgia/USA!

Meanwhile… back in Georgia…

.

This is the end of the line that used to bring dozens of cars a day to the JC Penney distribution center just outside of Atlanta.

.

All of this traffic has since switched to trucks, but with the decline of retail, there are a lot fewer trucks than there were recently.

.

.

TOP OF THE PAGE, and it is 10:45 on a Saturday night. I do believe it is time for a cold beer. Everyone feel free to join me.

.

Good evening all.

Flo - I will take a mint hot cocoa please. Thanks.

Steven NWP - Hopefully the issues get resolved smoothly. The kind of bullying that they were subjecting you too, as well as most likely others, is not acceptable in my book.

Ray - Hope you enjoyed the show!

Ken - Glad the computer finally decided to cooperate.

Ulrich - I hope that the new option is a good one, and that you and Petra can successfully complete the move to a happier and healthier location.

Kevin - Your office and classroom make me glad I have a j*b that allows me to see sunlight, on the rare occasions it makes an appearance!

Speaking of Drivers Ed class - I may have mentioned before, but I was a huge rebel in this class. It was the written test portion, and we were not supposed to write on the test papers, but instead use a notebook sheet and write the question numbers with answers alongside. Well, I circled a question on the test paper.

Why did I circle this question?

Well, it was a simple A or B question. It was “You are driving and your car stalls on the tracks. There is no train coming. Do you run A: Towards the train, or B: Away from the train?”

[D)]

I thought there was no train… What am I supposed to do, just start running around looking for one?

I circled the question. My separate answer, on the notebook sheet, was “C - I get out and push my car off the tracks. If there WAS a train, I would run towards it, but off the tracks.”

Yes, I got yelled at. I calmly said “Read the Question!”

I then got a very sheepish “You got it right.”

Weather - Got our first real snowfall Friday morning. Tons of drivers forgot how to drive in it. The town I deliver in the most (the town where I w*^k) was caught flat-footed by the amount of snow. They had a Deere Road Grader clearing the streets, as the plow truck was minus the plow still. Issue with this is that they

Evening,

Drivers ed, I was that one kid in the class that actually understood trains and knew what stop look listen and operation lifesaver is.

I would get on a dissertation how our drivers in America are horrible and drivers ed is useless but I’m not going to bore you guys.

Ulrich do me a favor and go enjoy a run on your Autobahn, it is a glorious thing, something us westerners only dream of having.

I’m looking at a Z3 3.0i Coupe now, British Green and Tan leather interior. 87k on the clock, manual transmission. I know I change the type of car I’m looking for almost everyday, what can I say I love cars, and I have ADHD, but take meds for that.[(-D]

Anyways anyone familiar with the Cannonball run? I’m assuming no because I’ve mentioned it 3x now.[(-D]

Anyways I stumbled upon it by coming across the YouTube channel of Rob Ferretti aka “SuperSpeedersRob”, his channel led me to Ed Bolians channel VinWiki where I learned more about the Cannonball Run and its records.

It started in the 70s with Brock Yates, and yes the “Transcon Medivac” getting pulled over in the movie actually happened.

The first version of the event was the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. The record for it was 32 hours 51 minutes, set by Dave Heinz and Dave Yarborough in a Jag XJS.

Good Morning!

It´s Sunday, 6.18am as I start this post! Time for my usual Sunday fare! Brunhilda, I go for crisp fried bacon, tasty scrambled eggs, a stack of pancakes wit a generous drop of golden maple syrup, nicely browned toast, butter, an assortment of preserves, honey, a small glass of orange juice, and plenty of dark roast coffee, please

Steven - yes, it´s true, there is no general speed limit on our Autobahns, but the number of routes having speed limits posted grows every day. Even without a speed limit posted, traffic conditions do not allow to go much faster than, say 75mph.

40 years ago, cars were not as powerful and fast as they are today. We were quite happy to cruise along with a speed of 70 to 80mph, only rarely being overtaken by a Porsche or a BMW. Mind you, even 80mph in a VW bug was only possible downhill. Cars like the Citroen 2CV or the Renault 4 had a hard time reaching 70mph and the Fiat 500 “Bambino” would not exceed 60mph! Today, the average car easily manages to go 125mph and beyond, but the average achievable speed still remains the same, or is even slightly less!

Take a country, half the size of Texas, put 83 million people into it and 46 million cars, plus 16 million trucks in the roads. That´s why driving fast will be a thing of the past!

It won´t be long before a general speed limit of about 75 mph or 120kph will come. If you want to go faster, take a train - they go up to 210mph!

Steven - I don´t want to be a spoil sport, but a Z3 is not a good choice of car. It is not without problems, which are extremely expensive to mend. They may come cheap to buy, but they cost an arm and a leg to maintain - like all BMWs.

Het all. Guess I need to change my saying on my post im not that age any longer lol today is my birthday. My gift is Stephen Kings newest book

[bday] - Jimmy!

Your coming of age, now, you know [swg]

Good morning, everyone. Clear, sunny, and cold. We babysat grandchildren last night and decided to drive home instead of spending the night. I am tired this morning.

Happy birthday, Jimmy. Keep having birthdays, and soon you will catch up with a lot of us.

This summer, I took a long trip through many western states. There were only a few times I took my cruise control off 80 mph. I also found that even though we complain, our roads were in great shape. Even the minor highways were all well taken care of.

The temperature at midnight last night was our high temperature for today. It will snow a little later today. Tomorrow, the high will be 23°. Winter is here a little early for us.

The cold weather did help harvest. Harvest in this area is just about complete. It was a good year with high yields around here.

W**k? From age 10, I knew what I wanted to do, and I did it my whole life. What I didn’t count on was all the stuff that goes with the job. There were meetings just about every night, and there were all the sports events or extra-curricular events that I was expected to attend on weekends.

By the time I was 64, I retired. Even though I enjoyed my job, I can safely say I don’t miss it at all.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday.

I have been a monk for more than 35 years, and I cannot understand what your fixation with women is.

It seems to afflict all model railroaders,… Everytime a layout is profiled in MR they have a box with the owner and his wife and children. I have never seen on with a guy and his boy friend.

But I’ll keep reading them anyway.

ROAR

Ach… I have never been asked for a Microsoct account number, but then we do not use retail software.

We download the latest copy from Microsoft, and just load it onto our computers. Of course we have to have the correct number of licenses to suport all of our installations, but at least they never bother me with the small stuff.

As a matter of fact when I buy a new copmputer with Windos 10 installed, they never ask for that either.

It may be a thing withthe Microsoft Home version, but maybe on on a windows 10 professional version that stuff is not required.

Good morning …

Jimmy: [bday]

MLC … They have a train show in Evansville twice each year. I’ll let you know when I hear is the next one.

Lion … I don’t think Kevin said he has a fixation with women. It is singular. He’s happy being married to one woman (Mary). That is Kevin’s choice, and we respect it. Blessings to him. … We also respect your choice to be a monk. Blessings to you. [:)]

Not much model railroading to report yet. I still have the nasty cold.

Everybody … Happy model railroading !

Lion - if your comment on Kevin´s post was meant tongue in cheek, I fail to detect the humorous part of it. We´d better leave it at that.

Changing the subject, Ulrich is the anniversary of the wall a big deal throughout the country?

Morning all, or what’s left of it.

Wife and I did our yearly walk through TrainFest, in Milwaukee Saturday morning. We buy the early tickets, lets you in at 8:00 am.

I’m always looking for a sweat shirt or two, nothing again this year. My favorite railroad sweat shirts got messed up with paint, grease, etc., through the years. Guess I’ll have look on line.

I tried to see what the big deal was with Scale Trains, and their anouncement with the ad in MR., but all I could figure out was the release of auto racks. Nobody there that wanted to talk.

The only thing about the “early bird” tickets, some booths are not open, or they are not “manned”, as many of them get together and talk amongst themselves so you have to “butt in” and get their attention.

Anyway, it was all good, as usuall. What a flood when the general admission ticket holders come in at 9:00 am! Lots and lots of kids, which is always a good thing.

Have a great Sunday!

Mike.

Good morning all, after a really soggy day yesterday we are back to dry and it should hit 14c today.

I got a chuckle out of what Lion said and I don’t think he was inferring anything by it. I saw it as a bit of social commentary. [oX)]

I went into Vancouver to the train show yesterday and I think it keeps getting a little better each year. The TT scale display(s) grow each year but the one new thing that really had the masses congregating was the Asian MRR displays. The Japanese displays were stunning and I am glad to see that Asian MRR seems to have landed in a way that it is now showing up at train shows as the European displays do. It is such a huge part of the global interest in the hobby I am surprised it has not shown up sooner, I look forward to seeing more next year. The number of kids at the show buying things was amazing.

Happy Birthday, Jimmy, hope you have a great day.

#1 son is sick in bed in Ottawa so we ordered him his favourite dinner and had it sent to him. Skip the Dishes is about all we can do for him being this far away. It made his night and I think made him feel a bit better.

Well, I need to start turning pedals and get a shower before the Canucks game at 1300hrs, I think it is Detroit we will pummel today.[oX)][(-D]

Apparently the Canadian Pacific Christmas Train is ready to hit the road, railroad that is.[:D]

The politicians made much ado about it, praising themselves in the usual manner, holding ridiculous speeches and twisting the historical truth to suit their purpose.

The people in both East and West were rather quiet, more looking into how this country has changed in those 30 years. Many are quite shocked to see the resurrection of the means and methods of oppression they fought against 30 years ago.

Going into detail would blow the format of this forum, so I just leave it with that.

Today we decided to leave Georgia for a trip to Alabama to look for a great place to eat a catfish lunch. A little searching on Google, and we decided on the Catfish Cabin in Albertville, Alabama.

.

We looked for other things to do in the area, and found the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama about 30 miles north of there.

.

It took about three hours to drive the backroads from Atlanta, Georgia to Scottsboro, Alabama. We saw some beautiful scenery in the Talladega National Forest.

.

I have never driven through the North side of Alabama before. It is very much different from Southern Alabama that borders Florida.

.

.

The Unclaimed Baggage Center was a bust. It was not the treasure hunting place we were led to believe. It was just like a large sized Goodwill. Not very much fun to look through and no bargains to be had, or unusual merchandise to see.

.

The Catfish Cabin, on the other hand, was amazing. T

Good Evening All,

The trucks launched for Daytona this morning. We follow Tuesday morning. I spent most of yesterday at my clubs Annual General Meeting before meeting the CFO at my oldest sons to celebrate my daughters birthday. A really nice evening and it’s always great to see Sam the grandson. He will be three months old the 20th and is doing well. A solid bundle is Sam.

Happy Birthday Jimmy.

Just figuring it will be a long time before a train shows up on those tracks Kevin. Looks like a full coat of rust on the top of those rails.

Spent today doing chores though I did shuttle back and forth to watch parts of the Giants at Jets game on TV. Got a lot of cleaning done and restained the steps to the second floor where they had started to wear through. The steps are the last part of the original house left save for the framing after the fire.

Strange story on the news with two young men in New Jersey launching a Porsche over a median into the second story of a brick building. Neither survived unfortunately.

Waiting for tomorrows big artic blast with s**w to boot. Catch y’all tomorrow.

Ciao, J.R.

Eveing Diners

Flo, give the gang and I a [B] Dirk his Bullalo treat and Jimmy a [bday] [^] cake!

I am hating technology right now! [:(!]

1. Have not been able to log into my Captail One card for a month or more. So I had the card locked. Tonight I called there IT center and got a person I could understand for a change. Seems the reason I cannot log in is because I have been using my old XP machine?

2. For right now I am Hating Windows 10 Home Pro! Cannot find simple things like My Computer or My Documents. [sigh] Going to it to work with next week so I have some peace and quite.

Later None smoking Ken and Dirk say’s Woof, Woof.

Hats off to those who have served and those who have sacrificed in the name of honor and freedom.

Veterans Day, Armistice Day or Remembrance Day — we pause and give thanks to those who fought bravely to defend freedom.

Just last night I finally got around to watching a movie my son gave me which was comprised of amazingly restored motion pictures taken during the Great War.

They Shall Not Grow Old.

I hope everyone is getting along OK.

Regards, Ed

Thanks for the tip Ed. I can think of a bunch of old Air Cadet buddies who would love to see the movie. I just ordered a copy.
