Well, Isn’t that the cutest little thing?
I WANT one for my “garden railroad”!
And, yes, there is no thing like the smell of {soot} belching out of a steam loco of any type while watching the scenery go by!
I am pleased I live near so many still operating steamers here in NE of the good Ol’e USA.
I am also fortunate that MOH is into steam trains as well, so going on a “vacation trip for a weekend” to see/ride behind am operating steamer is a no-brainer, MOH is THERE!
This coming summer we will venture to Conn. to ride behind a steamer taking us to a river boat for a rid
On my 95 del Sol Hondas answer to the Miata and that size.
Yesterday after I got a new catlytic converter and passed smog check the radio and clock weren’t getting any power. At home I fooled with the radio and checked the fuses, and I didn’t know what to do.
Today I took it back to the guy and he didn’t have any other customers thank goodness as he really spent a lot of time on it trying to find what happened. Tore the consol apart and took out the radio and thought the radio had died. So I ttok it to a nearby radio shop he said to go to and he said the radio was good.
Now more time and finally found when doing the smog check he had put a fuse back in the wrong slot, this affected the computer too and the car wasen’t running right also.
I am very gratfull foe his work, he didn’t charge me but I gave him $20. So from Tue noon till thur eve. and now my car is good.
Galaxy, I’m sorry the surgery ordeal too longer than planned. I’m glad YOH is doing ok.
Last year was Diagnosis Year for me. 2015 looks to be Surgery Year. Thursday was the day for Operation 1, using a laser to blow up kidney stones. This was my first time with a laser, and it may be the last. The problem is the stent they left in me, which shed the string that keeps it, uh, attached and accessible within a couple hours of my arrival at home. That’s not a good thing, especially since they told me, DON’T CUT THE STRING!! I didn’t, but here we are anyway.
I get to have aarthroscopic surgery on my left knee in 2 weeks. I tore a meniscus, I know not how but suspect it happened while exiting my car to shoot a CSX freight in Syracuse 2 months ago. Well, at least it may have been train related!!!
Next after that is another kidney stone hoedown, most likely in March. Then, I may have to have cataract surgery because the vision in my left eye is deteriorating rapidly. It, and the kidney stones, are apparently related to sarcoidosis, which was discovered in my system last spring. Kind of a kick in the shorts, overall, especially since I’d like to get working on designing and building my layout, not spending my time and money on medical bills and field trips to the hospital.[soapbox]
I got up later than usual, so I am really hungry. Flo, I´ll go for a big breakfast, so make it bacon & eggs, hotcakes, sausages, mushrooms, a tall glass of OJ and plenty of coffee for me, please.
I´ll have another go at finding a layout idea which is in my financial, space and ability limitations - I do hope I´ll be able to come up with something!
Johnboy - nice critter! Would you like to have a HO scale (nah, it´s OO scale) model of it, running on 9mm track?
Not exactly the same, but very close! It´s a model made from a kit by Backwoods Miniatures of UK.
The On30 guys are even better of - here comes the Ixion Models “Coffee Pot”:
we slept long and hard, and no, the cat could NOT wake us. Here it is 7:30 and I just got up!
MOH had some pain at surgical site last night, called for me to help. but was OK at solving problem. SO I willingly went back to sleep. Thing is, with the heavy duty pain kille on board, MOH will sleep often if the pain allows it.SO could sleep all day…
I have a script to go fill for MOH, and a few errands, but MOH will be OK.I gotta call my Dr.s office and find out what about my script refills I called in on Monday!!
FIL wants to be a pain and come over today, won’t take “no” for an answer.and NO, it is NOT because of concern over the surgery, he has alterior motives that have nothing to do with that! He always does! SInce MOH can’t go to him, he wants to come here. bosh.Just what I/we need.Yes, I “love” the man {about as much as he “loves” me}, but he tries patience so…
MEANING: noun: The practice of severe self-discipline or self-control. Also spelled as askesis.
ETYMOLOGY:
From Greek askesis (exercise or training), from askein (to exercise or work). Earliest documented use: 1873.
USAGE:
“There are many adults who develop a rigid black and white dress code as a form of ascesis.”
Galina Stolyarova; Local Queen of Fashion Releases Her Second Book; The St. Petersburg Times (Russia); Feb 8, 2012.
(Here’s another example of modern ascesis from The Onion.)
And the Quotes of the day for those who enjoy htem:
To reason with poorly chosen words is like using a pair of scales with inaccurate weights. -Andr&eacut
Galaxy, glad to hear she came through it OK. My wife went to Florida to be with her sick Mom, who has been moved out of the hospital and into a rehab place. Now, her Dad has something, and it looks like my wife may have it, too. It’s always something like that when she visits. Maybe she should fly down there sometime when they’re not sick.
Great news on the thermostat. I cut into the ceiling box in the basement that hides the pipe and wire run and pulled down a short loop of the wire. I cut the wire and started to check the circuit with a meter, and found that the problem was in the “easy” part, the run from there back to the oil burner room. I patched around it with a temporary wire, and after leaving it for the day and night all seems to be well. I figured (naturally enough) that the break would be in the completely buried-in-the-walls-somewhere portion of the wire run. This won’t take long at all to replace the wire where it belongs.
The long-range forecast for the Springfield train show is improving. The threat of “mixed precipitation” for the day before is gone, so the roads should be dry. That’s the part I care about.
Johnboy - pretty neat. I was amazed by the single seats vs. dbl seat inside. Wonder why ? Oversized isle ?
Mr. B. - Glad the Twire is an easy fix !
Uncle B. - torn miniscus. Had that surgery years ago. Did you elect to get knocked out or just numbed from the waste down ? Boy talk about pain when the numb stuff wears off [:O]
V8Vega - all that trouble for a fuss ? geez !
Galaxy - When it comes to Patti Label mac and cheese I do not display any Ascesis !
Hello all, sorry it took so long to post on here. The new years been interesting so far, I finally have a job where I racked up vacation time- now to wait for the NS steam schedule to be released to put that request in.
Well, modeling wise I got a new Kato locomotive done up, and two new boxcars. The open house schedule went over well this year, over 200 people easily visited- so it was a good year. Now for the club to prepare for our train sale.
Personally not much to report on in my life. I’ve still got a job, and told I am one of the best at my job. So that’s always a plus. There’s been a bit of snow here, but nothing unmanageable. I started exercising as well.
Italian roast coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.
Have started considering tearing up the Bachmann EZ track on my current layout and replacing it with Kato Unitrack. Not sure how much “damage” this would cause to the scenery, but there are two reasons behind such madness.[^o)]
I did a lousy job of ballasting and some engines and rolling stock find every flaw.[sigh]
Figuring out how to incorporate the old layout into the expansion (which I have not started the benchwork for yet) is at best, challenging.[%-)]
If I pulled up the old track, then it would be a snap (literally) to add a few strategically placed switches over to the new expansion. Still in the thinking stage. It would be a lot of work, but maybe worth the effort long run in how the trains run. What would really help most is if I could magically double the actual room size.[(-D]
Flo, I’ll have a plate of crispy hash browns with ketchup on it and add some cheese scrambled eggs if you don’t mind, and of course my usual humongous cup of coffee with abundantly generous amounts of cream, please.
Herr Ulrich, thank you for the links To the N scale track plans. Most helpful. My original thought on a 2x4 plan was to reproduce the HO Railroad That Grows plan in N, which I’ve always liked, but I don’t think it will really work because of the elevated trackage. This layout may have to slide under a couch, although that is yet to be determined. On the Mikes Small plans site, I kindof liked plans 1,2,3, and 5. So, I’m willing to take you up on that offer to help plan.
For criteria, this can be Anytown, USA, probably generic Mid-West. I intend to someday build all of the structures from the Glen Wagner Boys Life layout, which I have the plans to, so for industries, that would be a grain elevator, a warehouse, lumber yard building, and I’ll add a couple of other structures. I enjoy switching and continuous running. I’m not big on point to point unless extremely small switching or gigantic running to a destination.
YGW, thanks for the suggestion. I’ll keep it in mind.
And of course, anyone’s and everyone’s input and opinions will be graciously accepted.
My old `puter is giving me problems today. First, my track planning software would not run properly, second, the display went black. I don´t know what I did, but the pesty thing is now up and running, although the display still looks, say, different.
up831 - what track do you intend to use ? Atlas code 80, Shinohara code 80, Atlas code 55, Peco code 80, Peco code 55 and Kato Unitrack - all of them I can handle. Just tell me which one you prefer.
Flo, ok you don’t have a good Pinot Noir, what do you have?
Chateau de Thunderbird?!
Vintage 9:15 am today?!
Hmmmm! I’ll just have my usual gigantic cup of coffee with lots of cream please!
Herr Ulrich, my name is Jim, may I drop the Herr? Since this plan will be done on the cheap, as they say, I would be using Atlas and/or Peco code 80. For planning purposes, I would say Atlas.
my son’s N gauge set is an inexpensive Bachmann. The wheels are chrome plated or something like that. I’m not sure they would even roll on code 55. He ran it a little and MOH bought him some additional rolling stock, but for the most part it sat in a box and he’s long since grown up.
YGW, I had built a 2x4 table using 1/4" plywood and 1x2’s for support. That’s thin! It never got utilized, but I was thinking I could use that and glue a 1" thick piece of pink foam board to help shore it up. That way I could also possibly add a stream or some other grade variation and still leave the track on the same level.
Different How? If there is a deep color tint, then one of the pins on your video cable is bent or broken. (Or your video card is finished).
If the picture is too big it went back to the 600x800 pixel format, which could be fixed by boint to display properties and adjusting it there. Sometimes after a lock up the computer will continue to run with out the correct drivers. A re-boot should fix it.
I did 3.5 hours of running and errands.I thought I’d never get back home!
One of them was to take scripts to the pharmacy. As always, COme Jan 1, there are changes, and this year did not disappoint, but BOY, what a shock it was!!!. , well, lets just say they changed my prescription plan to the worse!I have to change pharmacuies too, besides costs going up. WOn’t say anymore.
When I have a heart issue and die, MOH can sue and maybe get something done to change such violations.
Divorce, which may be on the horizon anyway, is really starting to look good now, I will go back to the assistance I used to get, and pay only the $5 or $10 in copays, still a small forutune on my income alone , but…better than…rediculousness!
MOVE OVER ULRICH, I will re-join you in the “poor house” again!
Grr
well, in other notes, I have been home for 5 hours and MOH has slept all of that time, I wonder if time to awaken for meds?
Flo a JSTL and a beer chaser. If the Buick guy shows up, give him a beer.
Work It was a sunny warm day and I was not busy. I had 4 customers and 2 bought and I had a fair day with $1256.00. I think I made around a extra $19.00 which is far better than nothing!
Train Front I should have my Walthers Rio Grand Waffle Side Box Car of the RIP track tonight! [:D] It has only taken me 7 years to build the darn thing? [:-^] I think I could hav bulit a real one in that time frame. [(-D] I bought and for some reason I never worked on it, like many other projects.
Douglas What is the model number of the IBM you are working on for me? I like to see what one looks like.
Bon Soir Railfans! Flo - my usual in a frozen glass. And should we juice Kens [B] with some more nyquil or is he feeling better yet?
Galaxy - I just dont know what to say about your situation. I dont think words would help any. Certainly wont cover 1800% worth of increases. Times like this its nice to have a train room to get away from it all. If not for only a few minutes of peace.
Ulrich - Id say the same to you as i did Galaxy - no words to cover the sore spots. With you two in bad situations, plus a few others on the sick list, I would have to say 2015 is starting off on a bad note. Definately wishing all you folks the best.
Ken - hope your feeling better too. Love the B&O pics!
In General - For those with an eye towards the weather gauge, 50F and blooming sunny today.
RR - Thats right, i actually have something to report on the RR front. Of the last two days I spent one grinding through a PM loco diagram book. Ive read it maybe 1000 times, and it still keeps getting more interesting every time i read it.
Day two (today) was spent actually with some hands on modelling. I dont get to do alot of that. And the result is I am happy to say I have finally got a finished, working boxcar with working couplers. Id like another day to make another, then use them for a while.
Next couple of days i have to work so back on the shelf it goes for a few days. And thats about it folks. Two days of RR’ing fun.
I woke up at 3am and could not find any sleep again - now I feel [xx(]
I give up on finding an idea for a simpler and maybe smaller layout. Whatever I come up with, is either as expensive as the “big” one, or looks toy-like. But I also decided not to give up on MRRing! The thought of not being able to sit down on the engineer´s seat and run a train is giving me nightmares! So in order to find a way out of the financial dilemma, I re-read the “model railroading on the cheap” thread and found a solution for cutting down the cost - at least the cost for track!
I omitted one of the passing sidings in the storage yard, as I had to extend the backdrop to gain more depth for the scenery. This frees up a pair of switches which I already have. OK, there are Minitrix switches which I intended to use only in the hidden part, but so what! The track does not look as sleep as when using Peco switches, but that won´t be really visible on the layout, as I will mount it close to eye level. All I now need is a double-slip switch from Minitrix and a few more lengths of flex track. The double-slip switch is already on order from the “Bay” at half price!
Savings in total amount to over $ 100!
I think I can also cut down on the cost of the benchwork, if I will use MDF again. I will take a closer look into that today. MDF is only 40% of the price of plywood…
Jim - I´ll go for Atlas code 80 track, then. Give me a few days to come up with a first idea!
Galaxy - your last post leaves me sad! I won´t comment on it, I will just say this - don´t rush into anything!

Today’s Word {FOr YGW}:
senary
PRONUNCIATION:
(SEN-uh-ree)
MEANING: adjective:
Relating to the number six.
Having sixth rank.
Having six parts or things.
ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin senarius (consisting of six). Ultimately from the Indo-European root s(w)eks (six), which also gave us semester, siesta, and Sistine (named after Pope Sixtus IV). Earliest documented use: 1661
USAGE:
“‘Your father married six wives. … You talk of this scandal. How can it compare with your father’s senary adventure in matrimony?’”
Jean Plaidy; The Complete Tudors; Broadway Books; 2010.
LION was talking to pharmacist here. Price of generic drugs is way up. Some simple out of patent generics used to cost ther $10.00 / 100 now cost her $100.00 / 100. LION knows knot why this should be EXCEPT that, if that is what insurance will pay, then that is the price the companies will charge.
And as you found out, just because that is what the insurance says that is the price, it was not they who were going to do the paying. Keeping politics aside (as if a LION could keep politics aside) all I will say is: “I told you so 6 years ago.”
Prefered Pharmacy. Walmart is the prefered pharmacy under my plan. Only problem is Walmart cannot run a pharmacy in North Dakota. The nearest “prefered provider” is somewhere in Montana (wherever that is–I am sure the subway does not go out that far.)
But we selected our plan based o what our pharmacist would accept.
