Jeffrey's Trackside Diner For May 2025

Welcome to Jeffrey’s Trackside Diner where the food can’t be beat and the conversation is pretty darn good as well.

This month we will focus on rail served industries. Let’s see what we diners can come up with in the way of both prototype and modelled industries, perhaps having whimsical or oddball names, strange looking buildings and maybe a who’d a thought products and/or material(s) being delivered and/or picked up. Also, weird siding situations are always good for some chit chat.

First round is on me, enjoy!

Excellent job with moving the Diner, Brent. I barely felt a bump, much less a lurch! Not everyone on the far-east coast is sound asleep at 0350 :astonished:

Rail-served industries? Great Plan! Here’s a little place in Louisville, Kentucky that once made most of the GE home appliances. This view is less than a quarter of it. That trackplan would get a modeler the ‘spaghetti bowl award’ !

A quick visit.
Dawn had a reasonable night and has just got up. 10.45am. A good sign.

May make it to the train room this afternoon.

Good Morning Diners. Brunhilda, coffee and a cream cheese danish please.

Great topic for the diner this month. I remember someone mentioning Dr. Wayne’s GERN Industries. Hopefully someone has some photos of that.

The model railroad operations special interest group OPSIG has an industry database covering North America that I just learned includes some industries that only exist on model railroads (they are specifically identified). Neat concept and really useful!

Cheers everyone!

Good morning. I’ll have bacon, eggs, and coffee, please.

Brent, thanks for starting this months Diner.

Following Ed’s post, it reminded me of the old Army Ordinance plant west of Grand Island, Nebraska. It operated for WWII all the way through the Vietnam war. There’s nothing there now except some storage bunkers and lots of railroad tracks.

It’s difficult to see the tracks in this map.

The bomb storage bunkers that are still left. Most of the tracks and the buildings have been turned back into farmland.

Afternoon all. Still off work due to no power at the moment. sounds like western PA is down under 300,000 outages now at least, so they are making progress. Still have have my power and using this time productively.

Good morning from the land of sunshine where it is 10c.

Well I grabbed my cuppa and sat down at the computer and saw a notification from ebay that a Park car was for sale and it was a reasonable price for once. I got the wife in here so fast to buy it the dogs thought the house was on fire. I have been looking for years for one of these that wasn’t $800.00. Yippee!!! Now my Canadian has an end.

Feeling really good today and checked out how far I ran in the last week. Almost 11kms a day is not bad for a 68 year old geezer. Going to take a few days off though.

I was watching the hockey the other night and at 2100hrs when the game ended I decided to visit the 100 acre wood where it was getting dark. The forest comes alive at that time, it is wonderful. It was much darker than this photo shows as the Iphone was compensating.

I have to take the wife into Vancouver for a treatment today so we may or may not hit a favourite waterfront eatery afterwards.

I have two friends that work at this elevator, one is a metal fabricator and the other just takes samples of the grain all day as it flows in and out of the elevator. He hates his job so much because it is so boring, but even he admits he makes a ridiculous amount of money so won’t give it up.

All the best to all.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE 60 yrs OLD AND ABOVE PLEASE READ THIS.

This is for you. I really like what is said here and am going to try my best to follow it. Thank you to the person who wrote this. May God bless us all as we strive to be a blessing to others at this age, especially to our children.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Between 60 and death. It’s time to use the money you saved up. Use it and enjoy it. Don’t just keep it for those who may have no notion of the sacrifices you made to get it. Remember there is nothing more dangerous than a son or daughter-in-law with big ideas for your hard-earned capital.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Warning: This is also a bad time for investments, even if it seems wonderful or fool-proof. They only bring problems and worries. This is a time for you to enjoy some peace and quiet.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Stop worrying about the financial situation of your children and grandchildren, and don’t feel bad spending your money on yourself. You’ve taken care of them for many years, and you’ve taught them what you could. You gave them an education, food, shelter, and support. The responsibility is now theirs to earn their own money.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Keep a healthy life, without great physical effort. Do moderate exercise (like walking every day), eat well, and get your sleep. It’s easy to become sick, and it gets harder to remain healthy. That is why you need to keep yourself in good shape and be aware of your medical and physical needs. Keep in touch with your doctor, do tests even when you’re feeling well. Stay informed.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Always buy the best, most beautiful items for your significant other. The key goal is to enjoy your money with your partner. One day one of you will miss the other, and the money will not provide any comfort then, enjoy it together.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Don’t stress over the little things. You’ve already overcome so much in your life. You have good memories and bad ones, but the important thing is the present. Don’t let the past drag you down and don’t let the future frighten you. Feel good in the now. Small issues will soon be forgotten.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Regardless of age, always keep love alive. Love your partner, love life, love your family, love your neighbor and remember: “A man is not old as long as he has intelligence and affection.”

:triangular_flag_on_post:Be proud, both inside and out. Don’t stop going to your hair salon or barber, do your nails, go to the dermatologist and the dentist, keep your perfumes and creams well stocked. When you are well-maintained on the outside, it seeps in, making you feel proud and strong.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Don’t lose sight of fashion trends for your age, but keep your own sense of style. You’ve developed your own sense of what looks good on you – keep it and be proud of it. It’s part of who you are.

:triangular_flag_on_post:ALWAYS stay up-to-date. Read newspapers, watch the news. Go online and read what people are saying. Make sure you have an active email account and try to use some of those social networks. You’ll be surprised at what old friends you’ll meet.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Respect the younger generation and their opinions. They may not have the same ideas as you, but they are the future and will take the world in their direction. Give advice, not criticism, and try to remind them that yesterday’s wisdom still applies today.

Never use the phrase: “In my time.” Your time is now. As long as you’re alive, you are part of this time.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Some people embrace their golden years, while others become bitter and surly. Life is too short to waste your days on the latter. Spend your time with positive, cheerful people, it’ll rub off on you and your days will seem that much better. Spending your time with bitter people will make you feel older and harder to be around.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Do not surrender to the temptation of living with your children or grandchildren (if you have a financial choice, that is). Sure, being surrounded by family sounds great, but we all need our privacy. They need theirs and you need yours. Even then, do so only if you feel you really need the help or do not want to live by yourself

:triangular_flag_on_post:Don’t abandon your hobbies. If you don’t have any, make new ones. You can travel, hike, cook, read, dance. You can adopt a cat or a dog, grow a kitchen garden, play cards, checkers, chess, dominoes, golf.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Try to go. Get out of the house, meet people you haven’t seen in a while, experience something new (or something old). The important thing is to leave the house from time to time. Go to museums, go walk through a park. Get out there.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Speak in courteous tones and try not to complain or criticize too much unless you really need to. Try to accept situations as they are.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Pains and discomfort go hand in hand with getting older. Try not to dwell on them but accept them as a part of life.

:triangular_flag_on_post:If you’ve been offended by someone – forgive them. If you’ve offended someone-apologize. Don’t drag around resentment with you. It only serves to make you sad and bitter. It doesn’t matter who was right. Someone once said: “Holding a grudge is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die.” Don’t take that poison. Forgive, forget, and move on with your life.

:triangular_flag_on_post:Laugh. Laugh away your worries Remember, you are one of the lucky ones. You managed to have a life, a long one. Many never get to this age, never get to experience a full life.

My valued friends, enjoy peaceful life at this point in your life …

Don’t worry… be happy.

Good Afternoon,
The white throated sparrows have really arrived. Had over 50 in the back yard yesterday and similar today. We put out seeds for them as they are very hungry. They also enjoy taking a bath in our pond. We made a little gravel beach tor the birds so 5 or 6 can bathe at one time.
Will fire up the grill tonight as I picked up a couple of prime rib burger patties from a local store.
Time for tea and watch the birds.

Hi Charlie, making that little Beach for the birds sounds like a great thing to do.
I always like to see and watch wildlife, especially birds.
Today we visited a place called ‘Bolam Lake’, here in Northumberland and ‘sat on a Park-bench like bookends’, watching the waterfowl and world go by.

Good morning

Got a little more done on module 2, after a knock down water damage repair yesterday.

Charlie, Prime Rib Burgers! I’ll pick up the Lion and be over around noon!

Have you got those G scale gems out for a Spring run yet Ed? They’d certainly be good to see again for sure!

My rail industry share this month, is the Boise Cascade paper mill up in the International Falls, Minnesota.

My more preferred step dad used to say, (God rest his soul), some air pollution is more like a fart, it’s smell is awful, but isn’t bad for you or the environment
It’s amazing, after getting used to a mill town like that, you actually get used to the smell, almost welcoming it comming into town. It just wouldn’t be the same without it. When the wind currents were just right, we could actually smell it out at the lake, some 40 miles away.

Have a great weekend gentlemen :slightly_smiling_face:

Dawn is up and about. Not 100% yet, but about.

Good morning, I’ll take some espresso, I accidentally stayed up until 0200 Playing Trainz… Long day as well. However, I’m planning to hit up Ayer or Palmer this weekend. I’ve also got nothing going on this weekend, so I’ve got some time for models too.
