Or we could all stop by Brent’s place near the Western Coast!
I’ve been hearing through the years, He’s got the good Scotch up there!

I’m for that, except I may wait for the fires to die down first.
That’s my kind of parlor car service!
(“A Manhattan, please. Very cold”)
There’s this Vietnam Vet that flies a helicopter John.
He’s really old but he still flies good.
He can Serpentine around fires and get us up there.
Im thinking we should go. Life ain’t getting any longer, and last time you floated around in the Dead Sea was good enough for me.
TF
John, you have no idea how I’ve looked through my pictures.
Couldn’t find it.
Can you do me a square, and post that picture of you floating in the Dead Sea.
I’ve never seen anybody floating in the Dead Sea, until you.
And you of anyone I’ve ever known had enough guts to go over there!
A retired principal of a school, but a brave one indeed

I’m not really thinking of re-locating to the planet Mars.
It’s really cold up there, and it’s not a good idea to move up to a planet like that if you don’t like crap out of the ordinary.
TF
Did someone suggest you go? I had no idea you were considering leaving the planet! When I was a kid in the early 60s, I wanted to be the first person to go to Mars. Didn’t make it yet. Yes, I was a space travel nerd.

I remember having my very first Manhattan, yes, at the ripe old age of TEN!
It was 1966 and we rode the Erie-Lackawanna’s Lake Cities to Hoboken, then to the Big City through the Holland Tunnel. At the Hotel Piccadilly on West 45th. St. our tour group was enjoying a Thanksgiving dinner. While all the ‘grown ups’ were yakking away and mingling, the waiter was placing these fancy beverages at each place setting. Without hesitation, I went to my seat and started sipping away! I thought it was going to taste like oranges and cherries but it was more like cough syrup, but I persevered!
My mother came 'round and asked me about the empty glass on the table. “The cherries were good, anyway!” was my reply. Everyone got a good laugh but I didn’t get a refill! Welcome to Manhattan!
To this day it is still one of my faves!

Thanks, Mom!

What a great post! Thanks, Ed.
First, thanks for the beverage menu. I note scotch at fifty cents (1939). That’s $11.65 today–probably about what Amtrak charges. Beer is $4.66 in today’s money.
Second, great anecdote about your first drink.
Third, your photo is redolent of some of train ads we’ve been seeing posted here. It looks as if it were made in the 1940’s or '50’s.
I normally drink liquor straight up, but I do like a rum and Coke every now and then. A little bit ago I poured me a couple shots of Jägermeister. My recent check-up and bloodwork both went good, so I figured that calls for a few. Bottoms up, kings.
Thank you for the illuminating account of NH commuters.
Glad you found it interesting, Nickel Plater! Now if you really want to wet your whistle, saunter on down to the Pullman Lounge car! Also from 1939.

An extra fifteen cents to get a gilt-edge on your playing cards! Laxative water?

Dillinger Pennsylvania Straight Rye 1912! Fullstrength (114.2 Proof)? That sounds like white lightning if I’ve ever heard it! Not only did Pullman run the country’s largest hotel, their Club Car service was second to none!

I love it when TF and others mention their ancestry. Family leaving the U.K. and settling in the U.S.A. etc..
My grandfather was born in the U.S.A.. So was my mother aunts and uncle. When my grandfather died, (for reasons I shall not say) my grandmother brought her children to England.
Time to help my granddaughter with her garden layout.
Good morning, everyone. Flo, I’ll have bacon, eggs, and coffee, please.
Today is the day my wife has waited for – Downton Abbey is at our local theater. Not my kind of movie. My wife and daughters watched all the series episodes, and loved the movies. What this all means is that I will pay for a theater seat to take a nap.
I’ll have to look for the Dead Sea photo. Actually, the several weeks my daughters and I spent hiking and riding around Israel, Palestine, and Jordan two years ago were great. Not once did we feel any danger. In Jordan, we had a man who met us at the border and took us around.
The best part for me was Petra in southern Jordan. Pictures don’t do it justice for the size, remoteness, and impressiveness. You can see the size of these structures – that’s me in front of the Monastery (it’s just called that, it wasn’t one).
My daughters took about 22 million photos, so if anyone wants to see them, I’ll give the diner fair warning.
My wife saw that on a TV program. I’ll have to read about that.
David, all my ancestors came from Germany. However, I know I’ve mentioned before that when my father was in England waiting to cross the channel in WWII, he traveled to Scotland. He said it was the most beautiful place he had ever been.
I hope everyone has a great day.
Good morning from the left side. 13c and sunny as usual.
I also find it interesting. Much of my family came over in the 1750s through Quebec and what is now Virginia making their way to Manitoba to farm. The bulk of the clan comes from Ipswich and there are many of the Batman clan still there.
About forty years ago I got a letter from a hoity-toity lawyer in England that a large Estate was being settled where no Will was in place and I was close enough to be notified that I may be a beneficiary. I was so far down the pipe I did not get a dime.
Then, about 20 years ago I got a notice that I was getting some land that was left to me and it came with a Lordship. So I am a Lord. By this point in history the Estate had been carved up so many times that what I ended up with is nothing more than a large cow pasture that is leased out to a local farmer. No giant castle, no nothin. The farmer pays the bills, I have never seen a dime out of it. I have all the paperwork but I can’t even remember where it is.
I also inherited a few acres in Manitoba near Lake Winnipeg. It was worth so little I turned it back to the Government as it was not even worth paying the property taxes on.
I like Downton Abbey although I’ll wait until it is on TV to see it. The last movie I saw in the theatre was Top Gun II. Too many people on their cell phones make the movie theatre just an annoying place to be now.
When my son was working in the film industry they would have pre-release screenings for the cast and crew of the films and their families. We went to the Deadpool one and the movie Wonder and a couple of others. Those were a lot of fun as even the big stars were there.
The wife and I headed to the ocean to our favourite Greek joint yesterday for a roast lamb pig-out and a nice red wine. A beautiful sunset made us linger longer than usual. I won’t be eating today.
Best get at it, we had a couple of small trees come down on the driveway so I need to fire up the chainsaw.
Graffiti everywhere.
All the best to all.
Graphiti indeed, but that particular artist knows both trains and perspective. Quite the job!
POST HOGG!!!
So I am sitting here at my desk with my son and we are going over the markets as we often do. While we are chatting I am going through a pile of mail on my desk throwing the junk mail in the blue box as I go. I chuck one in the direction of the box, it misses and lands on the floor. My son picks it up and is just holding it while we are chatting. Eventually looks at it and it is for an online casino. It says scratch the code and get four free pulls on the slots or four free hands of blackjack. He scratches the code enters it into his phone and on the third free pull on the slots wins $1500.00.
Within ten minutes of winning the money is in his bank account.
I say HEY!!! That was my piece of junk mail. He just pats me on the head as he walks out the door of my office and says, thanks pops, I’m going golfing.
Kid’s these days.
Did some yardwork today. The hedges needed trimmed after that I took all the clippings to the compost pile. We’ll also probably need to mow a few more times before the cold weather starts up.
