The only time I was in Colorado was a stop over in Denver airport on our way back from San Fransico to Edmonton (please don’t look at the map - it’s an airline thing! [banghead])

Not my #1 Go To, especially as pasta spikes my blood sugar big time. However, ther eis good news for any diabetic pasta lovers for whom that spike is an issue. On the BBC TV program “Trustme I’m a doctor” there was an item on pasta and blood glucose levels. Turns out that cold pasta spikes the glucose level less than hot! But wait, there’s more! Reheated cooke dpasta spikes those levels even less than does cold pasta. So, bon appetite!
A neighbour across a vacant sub-division lot puts on fireworks - last night it was over 10 minutes continuous display. Awesome. Folks drive to watch and park up at the (always empty on a Sunday night) parking lot of the Rehab across th e street from us. We get to watch fromout front room or front deck depending on the black flies. Last night it was an indoor view!
Painted the Berichan Station awning extension roofs, and added the supports last night.
I am fairly new to the forum so I just wanted to stop in and say hi. This May I got back into the hobby after a 10 year absence which was caused by college and law school (which both caused a lack of money and time). I have also switched from the 3 rail O of my childhood down to N, mostly because I live in Philadelphia with roommates so my layout had to fit in my bedroom somewhere.
My layout is small but is supposed to be an homage to the Schuylkill River valley near Manayunk and Gladwyne. The time period of the layout is pretty fluid but my focus is late Reading early Conrail.
Also, I FINISHED BALLASTING LAST NIGHT! I might have done a little happy dance and said some things which if repeated would violate forum rules.
…that happens more often during the ballasting for some of us![:-^] Number one rule in the diner is be polite to the staff or risk the ire of Vinnie who has connections!
Yesterday was one of those all day lounge days for me. Every once in awhile you need one of those. I think because it was so hot and humid all last week it took just about everything out of me. Having my new Model Railroader issue was convenient as I did a lot of reading.
Ulrich thanks for starting the diner for us. I have spent some time on the Colorado River… just putting in a request, maybe the diner can be in Nashville Tennessee in September.

I have read Johnny’s favorite restaurants were TGI Fridays, Valentino’s, Mario’s, and the most recent was CenterPoint barbecue.

John you have talent and it shows. I really like that red snowblower. Hopefully you built that in the fall. You know the saying build-it-and-they-will-come. I’m sure that applies for snow as well.
Garry thanks for the Railroad history lesson. I did not know any of that. Maybe this explains why I have a hard time finding any Wisconsin Central that fits with my modeling era.

These are the Redstone coke ovens west of Aspen. Coal came by narrow gauge and left as coke on the standard gauge Crystal River RR.
This is the road coming south toward Durango. I think this is before the town of Ouray.
The Strater and the Gen Palmer are two of the old hotels that have been refurbished in Durango. I recommend the Palmer as being the nicer of the two and right next to the train station.

Henry - thanks for the pictures! I have two books of that region. One is Len Shoemaker´s beautiful history of the Roaring Fork Valley and the other one the Crystal River Pictorial by Dell A. McCoy. Both books a very dear to me and I often just look at the beautiful and atmospheric pictures.
Nothing really happened today, which makes it a good day. I am not keen on surprises these days.
LOL, the snow blower was built, or so the tag on the photos says in May of 2007. Don’t look too closely because the rotor, for want of a better word, is one continouous helix of plastic swarf from drilling a hole. So, in reality, the snow would just pile up at one end of the scoop, and not get to the impeller! Good subject for a sunny day - not so much in too few month’s time!
I was too hasty in saying “all” i had to do to finish the station with new awnings was to glue them on. After that (and they are on and the glue drying) the whole roof has to be painted so everything matches. Then white edgeing will be painted on the platform and white lines (decal strips) go on the platform edges. So, a bit more yet…
Ulrich: Glad you had a less eventful day. Belated thanks for loooking after the Diner logistics month on month, and thanks for the good wishes re our nation’s bd. We’re certainly happy we made the move from the UK, although we thought we were headed for NZ, but things changed!
I’m sitting here at the 'puter enjoying the airconditioning in the house! Currently 93°F and humid outside. Went over to the fieldhouse for my morning walk. Got their about 10:30 and they still had the big outdoor sliding door wide open… It was already in the high 80’s by then. Sweat was running off me after the first 8 laps. About that time they decided to closed the door and leave the heat increase outside but it was already very hot in there. I did keep myself hydrated by stopping at the drinking fountain several times. Got my 20 laps (3.7 miles) in with good time. I considered taking another few minutes rest and doing two more laps which would have given me my next goal of 4 miles walking over there each time. Hope to meet that within the next couple of weeks. They used to run the air conditioning during the summer over there. Haven’t used it yet for the main part of the building. Still better than hoofing around outside!
May get some thunderboomers this afternoon. Already looking funny to the East of me.

Afraid Sparkie’s time is coming sooner than we want. Sparkie is a American Eskmio that we got from a American Eskimo Rescoue when he was 10. He is going on 15 this year, Tiff are last American Eskimo past at 17. Last night my post was cut short because wife was taking him out and he fell and could not stand up. [sigh] (he was on a title floor) I got him standing on carpet and then outside and he did his business and seemed sort of Ok. I have seen this before with two other dogs. Going to try adding Glucosamine to his food. Helped Tiff the second American Eskimo a lot, seem to shave 4 years off her age.
While at the Vet I saw my first Irish Wolfhound in years. I miss my girls Sonya and Shaddy. Both Irish Wolfhound’s. Wife say’s “you cannot have another one!” [:-^] Hum, guess she does not help pick the pup next time when it is time. [:-^][swg]
Had my first on road instruction today, I did not run over anyone or hit anything so I’m doing good.
But in 4 hours at work, they don’t have much for me to do so I’m just trying to get a few hours so I have something the resembles a paycheck, went to home Depot got 40 more fence boards, 2 posts, 6 twobufours, and 2 80lb bags of quikcrete, well they didnt have enough 2x4s so I went and asked if they could get someone to get another bundle down, while I was waiting for the guy who never showed up I noticed they had other pressure treated 2x4s for 4.57 instead of the 5.98 on the ones I was getting so I swapped them, they also didn’t have any quikcrete in the 80lb bags in store, so I paid for them thinking I’d get them out front on my way out, well they didn’t have any out there either! So I had to go back in wait in the return line (which was pretty long) and return them a day buy two 60lb bags, I thought the returns desk would give me trouble with the return but they didn’t, then while I was loading the 40 fence boards onto the cart out front (they don’t have them inside the store) my mom said someone who works at HD said to another employee that there was some kids loading up wood out front and it looked “suspicious” no one came over but I did have my receipt handy when I was loading them into the truck.
Now the 2 sections are up, next week we’ll get some more and turn to start closing in the back yard.
Just checked my bank account, PayPal did their “2 deposit, 1 withdrawal verification” so I had to go through PayPal to verify, and I just noticed I have 200 plus bucks in my account, that means… my paycheck cleared!!!
It was not too bad, a little under $500.00 for the stove.

We bought all the appliances on Black Friday Weekend last year. They did not get delivered until February. The Refrigerator (Whirlpool), Dishwasher (Maytag), Stove (Samsung), Microwave (Whirlpool), and range hood were less than $2,500 for all.

Had to wait in line for about three hours, but I think I saved about $1,000.00 on the purchases.

Track Fiddler … You suggested the Diner visit Nashville, TN in September, and I like the idea. I live in KY, but Nashville is only about 100 miles away. You mentioned Johnny Cash. I suggest we include all of Tennessee as well as KY. There are other famous singers. Elvis in Memphis. Everly Brothers in Central City, KY. Several more. … My 2 cents. [2c]

Here we have departed Denver and are beginning the climb into the foothills . An eastbound UP freight train is in the distance on a siding.
I’ll post more photos of the trip in the days ahead.
