I have enjoyed the first DVD immensely. Watching it on a big screen tv is great! I know the second one is supposed to be out in September. How is that one coming and when are you planning on shipping it? Hope I’m not bothering you but I enjoyed the first one so much I’m anxiuos for the second one to get here.[:D]

The next DVD is in the middle of production at the moment and we hope to ship it before the end of September.
I’m pretty thrilled with whats going to be in volume 2.
We’re currently working on a 3D computer modeling sequence that shows how the mushroom benchwork goes together, stick by stick. Cool stuff! The camera flys around and through the model as the benchwork pieces are added and I explain how the multideck benchwork is constructed. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like it done on any model layout video to date. State of the art stuff!
Then, we go into the layout room and look at the actual benchwork and comment further on construction. Since you watched the benchwork structure get built in the computer model, you know just what you are looking at on the benchwork, and you can see how it looks in the real world.
And there’s much, much more. There’s a demo doing track planning on a computer using a generic CAD program, a live demo of masonite spline roadbed construction, live demo of flex track laying, a description of how to do layout track plan analysis using formulas, some real boo-boo’s I made in the early days of the Siskiyou Line construction and how I fixed them.
I’m getting excited about this next volume … it’s presenting a lot of layout design and construction concepts by way of example that I hope others will find useful.
And yes, I actually use a mirror as shown when laying track to check the alignment. That’s one of the many tips and tricks I share in the video.

I should mention Joe’s videos aren’t just another pretty face, as in “Look at my layout. Isn’t it pretty?”, though there’s plenty of “eye candy” to admire, for sure.
Joe’s videos also show you, in a very clear and understandable way, how to do things which you can apply to your own layout. The videos are entertaining AND a great reference resource for “how to do it.”
Best of both worlds in my opinion. Believe me, if you’re not thrilled with the video’s, you ain’t breathin’!
And I should mention this is MY INDEPENDENT OPINION as I don’t have any affiliation, financial interest, etc., etc., with Joe or the video company which created the video. Heck, I’ve never even met Joe! [8D]

The DVD is a burned DVD-R. The sales volume on the video does not justify a pressed quantity order.
Modern DVD players (3 years old or newer) will play DVD-Rs just fine. We’ve had perhaps one person so far with an older player that had an issue, so it’s pretty rare. With modern DVD players availble for a little as $35 on the street, that’s not much of an issue these days.
And you can always play it on the DVD drive in your PC … and the DVD comes with extra PC file goodies as well, so it helps to have a PC with a DVD drive anyway. [:D]

That is funny as I found just the opposite. The DVD player that we have that is 5 or 6 years old, plays your DVD just fine. The new one which we got last Christmas freezes up on your DVD (which is a VCR and DVD player that cost $150). This just means I can’t play your DVD in the crew lounge (unless I go buy a higher quality DVD player).

It’s probably worth noting that combo players (VCR + DVD) sacrifice features to enable a reasonable price on the combo system. So it does not surprise me your combo system does not play a DVD-R. It probably will not play an audio CD either, nor a video CD (VCD), which any recent model DVD only player should do.
The fact your old DVD player plays the DVD-R means you got a forerunner model, so you made a wise purchase. It’s only in the last 3 years or so that most DVD players now play DVD-Rs.
So as you can see, the VCR/DVD combo players are not that good a deal because they end up being neither a very robust VCR nor DVD player. For anyone trying to decide the way to go, spend just a bit more and spring for the separate VCR and DVD players.

Very Cool. Now I’m really looking forward to the next Video. I’m currently in the beginning stages of construction of my new layout and this should be enjoyable and informative.
