In 1948 Model Craftsman published 3 articles by John Allen in Oct.,Nov. and Dec. of that year on his D&G 2 stall engine house complete with plans. I am looking for those plans and would appreciate any help.Thank you. TH
good question . like many i’m a fan of john allen’s G&D and i’d love to try to build his engine house . have these articles ever been republished or posted on the internet ?
i think a good idea for a book would be to collect all JA’s articles from various magazines and publi***hem all together . i figure whoever did it wouldn’t have to pay the author much [:D]
A few weeks ago a friend of mine built John Allens 2 Stall Engine House from a FSM (Fine Scale Minature) kit. It had detailed plans and also several views on it. If you are a moderate scratchbuilder it wouldn’t be that hard to do from the drawings. It gives you all the templates to cut the wood to. I will see if he still has them.
There is a book on Ebay about his layout.
You can probably buy photocopies of the articles from Carstens.
If not, photocopies of most past model railroad publications can be ordered from the NMRA’s Kalmbach Library. I believe these can be obtained for a fee even by non-NMRA members.

Edit: By the way, the book that was mentioned has photos of the engine house, but no plans.
Death of the author does not release published works from copyright.
Thanks to you all for your responses! I recently was able to pick up a second hand copy of the Allen book which brought on the inspiration for building the engine house. I tried the reprint route, but apparently the particular articles in question aren’t available-unless I missed something. As to the offer from “gasturbine”-it’s greatly appreciated.Thanks. By the way, I did a google search for FSM and couldn’t locate them. Do they have a web site, or who carries there kits?. I would like to scratch buiild one, but if a plan isn’t available, I might even consider buying a kit just for the sake of the plans. I prefer building my own “stuff” unless it’s over my head. Thanks again for all the input. Tom
A correction. I did another google search and found FSM without a problem. They advertise the kit without a price which tells me I can’t afford it.
You can check Railpub http://www.railpub.com/ for back issues. Also, most train shows have one or more dealers in back issues.
Also, the magazines may own the copyright not the author depending on their contract.
Certain authors would be very enjoyable to have reprinted works done. This has been done for John Armstrong - “The Classic Layout Designs of John Armstrong”. I would also like to see E.L. Moore and Frank Ellison.
Enjoy
Paul
On the FSM site I found a link with some decent pictures and the model size 4.5" x 9"
unless your looking to make an exact duplicate you should be able to make a very close replica from just the many pictures. here is the link.

Bill and Paul:
Thanks for the suggestions. I will follow up.

Copies of the engine house article and others can be found on this Yahoo group in the files section.

This is another G&D group of interest.

Thanks Ray. I’m getting a whole new education.
