Johnny's Toys in Latonia, KY/Cincinnati

Arguably the best LHS left in Cincy, it appears that they are going out of business. The entire store is bare and what’s left is on clearance. But the train shop is still pretty well stocked and was very busy this afternoon. Anyone in the Cincy area know anything?

i was told by the owner himself that they are not going out of business during the trainshow they had in january but they are trying to move to a smaller building/store to save them money.

Bummer. What is it with Cinncy and LHSs? Golf Manor, Davis Trains, now Johnny’s is downsizing. \

EDIT: Reread post. Iwonder, when they downsize. how much will still be for trains. and what rest will be for toystore.

well right after i posted this message i drove down the hill to johnnys toys and talked to him again and he said again that the only thing thats going out of business is the baby section of the store and the rest is staying open. but the possibility of them moving to a smaller building is still in the works. hope this soothes your discomfort a little.

when i seen your

I know what you mean. I live in Dayton, and we just had a Hobby Town USA go out of business. It didn’t have much in the way of railroad stuff, but it was good for picking up dowel rods and other misc building material. I believe all we have left up here is Smitty’s (which is my favorite), The Hobby Shop, which is over priced, and the Trolley Stop up in Troy, too far a drive for me. There is another one in Springfield called DHL which has a good collection of transition and modern cars and locos. There is a nice small shop in Middletown that has a good selection of cars and buildings along with a consignment shelf. I heard there is one in Wilmington and a large one in Richmond IN, but I have been to either of those yet.

If you are looking for C&O cars and locos, there is a store in Hurricane, WV that has quite a large selection.

I was bitter when they closed the one in Greenhills, great people there.

Yeah, I found out about that one the hard way. We drove out of Downtown Cinncy all the way there to find the out of buisness signs. Not an unbearable distance but the weekend we had to be there would have been better used had we known we needed to go to Latonia instead.

My only discomfort now is what te mix of Hobby and toy will be. If it will be a strong train influence, or if it’ll become tracks in an iasle like the trains sction in ToysRus was. I sure hope not, judging by train buisness in both the (ex-)Green Hills and the Latonia Stores. But downsizing cuts out room for a lot of things.

I used to live in Columbus and The Train Station on Indianola Ave is a very good store. Depending on where in Dayton you live, that’s probably about an hour drive, maybe a little more. I make it a point to go there when I visit Columbus. I think there is now there is another store called Robbies Hobbies, but I have not had the chance to check that one out. Just a thought for the Dayton folks.

We still have a Hobbytown USA off of Fields Ertel Rd, and it’s decent for structures and some scenery supplies but not good for engines and rolling stock.

also we have dcc trains thats on beechmont ave off of 275 in ohio. if they dont have it in stock more than likely they can get it and they will beat/match the cheapest price you find out. check them out they have a pretty nice stock and when he orders it for you he normally gets it in in like 2 days if he can find it for you. ask for rob

I went over there last Saturday and they really don’t stock much and they seemed too busy to talk to me. But maybe I’ll try again and ask for Rob. Thanks!

There are 2 stores in Richmond, In, Veaches Toys, with a decent sized upstairs section of trains, and right next door is a Hobby Shop with a good selection of modeling supplys. I’m not sure what the name is, but as it is right nextdoor, it was hard (even for me) to get lost going from one to the other.

St Mary’s has a good shop downtown, St Mary’s Trading Co, and there is a good newer shop in Muncie, In, at 311 S Walnut St named Toys Forever.

I used to shop at Train Station all the time when I lived there. Good shop! It’s too bad Blue Caboose closed. It was great having two shops a couple miles apart from each other. I think that Robbies Hobbies is on W. Broad St. by Westland mall. (or so I’ve been told) I heard they were pretty good too.

EDIT-It looks like Robbies is on N High St. I heard there was a new one on W. Broad, but I don’t see a listing for it.

Alexander…thanks for the post. We visit Cincinnati occasionally to see family members.

I’d be interested in seeing your shop.

Also, do you know who bought the Rivarossi parts inventory from Golf Manor Hobbies whix hwent out of business. People ask where to get Rivarossi parts, and I do not know where.

Thanks

Jim, you are welcome. Golf Manor inventory is selling at an auction in KY, please call Rob he knows the name of this auction place; I believe it is in the city just across the Ohio River.
