Junctions-Most diamonds.

Are there any junctions with more diamonds than Marion, OH with 16 diamonds?

Hammond IN in its prime would have had at least 15 diamonds, with MON, E-L and N&W crossing the IHB.
I’m not sure how many diamonds were at 21st Street just south of the Chicago River where the IC Iowa line crossed the PRR and C&WI crossed both of them.

What’s the situation with the Folkston (GA) Funnel?

Chicago immediately comes to mind. [:o)][8D][:)]

Any specifc place in Chicago? I said Marion because there is only 1 junction to my knowledge.

I think Blue Island Junction is riddled with diamonds.

Heh, I was “playing” off the fact that you grouped them by city name.,…just joking, as I suspected you were talking about one specific point, but since you failed to specify…[oops]

Actually I checked just now and Blue Island isn’t that special for diamonds but there are a few places that are interesting.

Griffith in Indiana has CSX, EJE and CN crossing the area. At one time Erie Lackawana, C&O, NYC ex Michigan Centreal line and the GTW crossed each other. I don’t know how many lines they had each but that would have been a sight to see.

Another area is know as the State Line which has NS, CSX, IHB and the CSS&SB crossing paths.

Finally in Chicago, 21st Street near Dearborn Station has or had 26 diamonds on a several line curve with a muli track line crossing it. Not really a junction but certain interesting to look at.

Joliet, Illinois, in its prime also had 16 diamonds. The four tracks of the Rock Island were crossed by the four tracks of the GM&O/Santa Fe, each of course double tracked.

Today, just 4 diamonds remain; the double tracks of the BNSF and CN (which becomes UP south of the diamonds) are crossed by but a single track of Chicago’s Metra.

I don’t if know if they still exist, but in Chicago around the NYC’s 16th St. tower there were at least 26, depending on the acceptable distance, and if you count the double slip switches.

Chicago… Western Ave (A-2) where the UP Geneva Sub crosses the CP (Metra) has twelve diamonds. Because of the angle of the crossing, many of the diamonds are also double-switches. Western Ave is just west of both Union Station & the Oglevie Transportation Center (CNW) Approx 150 Metra trains cross Western Ave each day. There used to be 18(?) diamonds/double-switches before the PA Panhandle was removed.

Dolton, Il There are 9 (?) diamonds between the UP, IHB, CSX & NS.

So,… the truth comes out- you’re not just a Junctionfan - you’re a diamond fan too! Who would og thought!..[:)]

Chris, the Panhandle line wouldn’t have added any diamonds to Western Avenue, as it stayed on the southern edge of that area.

Back in the day, Griffith should have had 20 diamonds. Just four now.

Blue Island should have only six diamonds; Dolton should have ten (I’m doing this from memory). Dolton would have had 14 when the Panhandle was still around, I believe.

Deval: 11 (add five to that when the old Soo was two tracks).

State Line: At least 15.
Hammond: 15 then, six (?) now.
Brighton Park: 14 at one time.
Ash Street: 20? Probably fewer now.

Marylin Monroe was wrong. Diamonds aren’t just a girls best friend.[:D]

I’ve got a copy of an old map on my computer at home (I’m working right now[ ;)]) that shows Western Ave with the PA Pandhandle entering from the southwest. I’ll have to check the map when I get home. Going from memory [D)], I think that it shows the Pa & the Milw Rd merging toghther. The Milw Rd crossed the CN Wat a weird angle & then turned / merged with PA creating the addtional diamonds/double-slips.

Ok, I found the link for the old A2 Western Ave map. It looks like the map is from @1940. It might be easier to save the map & resize it for better viewing. Lots of information… I’m counting 22 diamonds, plus there is one additional diamond on what appears to be industrial side tracks. For a short distance east of Western Ave., there are 9 tracks that parrellel each other from 3 different railroads!!

For the record… Dolton, IL currently has 10 diamonds.

Yeah, Griffith was one heck of a plant in it’s day. I would have loved to have seen it back then. I recall seeing an old shot in the Chicago area of a really wild plant with all kinds of diamonds, but I can’t remember where it was now… I’m thinking it might have been somewhere up there in the IN/IL lake area.

Forest Hill may have had 16 diamonds at one point. BRC and WAB (both double track) crossed PRR (Panhandle) and B&OCT also both double track. It is now down to eight since the Panhandle was abandoned. There may be additional diamonds depending on where the interlocking limits are.
