while looking through my junk box,I came across a old, cheap rivarossi 0-6-0 that I thought I might be able to get running then strip, super detail, paint and install a decoder.I cleaned the wheels and put it on the track.the headlight came on so I gave it a little more power. It lurched foward, made one revolution of the drivers…and stopped. Then I noticed the ash pan glow (which I dont have) and a beautiful plum of white smoke, for a second I thought I had a live steamer. After I find the cause I would like to repower it–Are riv. motors still available or can I get a NWSL that would fit?The model does’nt have any valve gear, just drive rods…I enjoy playing around with it,but is it worth it?will repowering it make it run at least a little decent?
Mike,
Are you absolutely sure you “cooked” the motor? It is probably a 3-pole motor. Take it out, thoroughly clean it up, reassemble, and try running it directly off a transformer before putting it back in the engine. It may have burned off some excess lubricant or smoke juice. If the motor is definitely fried, you might find an old engine at a swap meet that has a motor that would fit, or NWSL might have a replacement. Try to get a 5-pole motor. Good luck.
