just seen a 1:1 flatbed truck full of wheel sets

wow they packed them on that truck bed, man… they looked like there were 15 on that truck. shined like a crombe auto part too, stainless steel I guess

first time I have ever see something like this, yup the mow will have there hands full this week. isn’t it funny there trucked in and not brought in on rail cars

there is a huge engine house in charlestown, this engine house is long, could fit the whole train in there. wide too looks nothing like the wathers kits, it was blue with huge vents on top. love to snap some photos, but I bet I will get run in from the police for terraristic activity if I did. plus its a good distance away at community college, and my 3.2 mp camera may not be up to the task

K

See it all the time out here. Probably two, three times a month I spy a rig on the freeway haulin’ wheels.

Guess that’s life in the big city, eh?

Stainless??

ok maby not stainless but they were new and clean

huge too

would look good on my jeep

They may have been replacements for a light rail system that has no connection to a mainline railroad and can’t receive delivery by rail.

Most wheel sets I see are delivered by truck. The rail connection or lack thereof doesn’t seem to matter.

At least once a month I see a few flat bed cars stacked with new wheels on CN’s main line. Every once in awhile I see a flat bed trailer with them as well.

Progress Rail has one of their sites here in Mojave Ca. They are just like the tire store you take your car to, only they install new wheels for railroad cars. From what I’ve seen, old wheel sets arrive and new ones depart by truck. Inbetween, the old wheels are pressed off the axle, axle and bearings are PMed, and the new wheels are pressed on.

The new wheels arrive by rail, usually stacked about 5 high in (BNSF) box cars.

Every time I go camping in east Texas I pass by the Meridian Rail facility in Corsicana, TX. It is located on the SP line and processed wheelset transported via flat car and regular truck. I should really post a picture of the facility as it is very near Highway 31 and has wheelsets waiting for machining everywhere. Wonder if they give plant tours too?? Check their website at www.meridianrail.com.
