Kato Mikado N...front coupler help

Hi,

I have a new Kato Mikado that I would like to add a working front knucle coupler to. Any suggestions on which brand or how to install? It looks like there is no area to just attach one and I’m confused by the long shafted coupler supplied with the loco and the simple drawing on the box sleeve…this looks like another non working dummy… Any thoughts?

Thanks ----Rob

You’re looking for the Micro-Trains 2002 coupler conversion. You can get it here, among other places: http://www.fiferhobby.com/html/micro-trains__coupler_conversi.html

Microtrains has a direct conversion for the Kato Mikado. I’ve installed them on both of mine.

Their conversion kit #2002 includes a coupler conversion for the locomotive pilot and the tender. If yours is one of the newer units, you won’t need to change the coupler on the tender. I originally changed both of mine, but later ordered two of their newer rear trucks for the tender, which has their new coupler system.

Another good addition to this model is the conversion of one set of drivers with the traction tires. It does improve it’s pulling ability.

Mis1621, hope you’re still around to respond to the revived thread. Where did you order the new tender trucks for the Kato Mikado? That sounds like an easier solution than the conversion. However, I am trying to install the Micro-Trains 2002. Any hints there? This is my first attempt at a coupler conversion and the provided instructions are only so-so. Thanks.
