Kato is offering a beautiful representation of the California Daylight train that I’ve had in my sight for a while. Now that the loco is offered in black livery,it is even more appealing. But before I go for it,I’d like to hear comments of current owners as to how good it is.I know it can pull but how smooth is it?I expect the same quality that we can find in other Kato products but would like to be sure.I’m planning a DCC/Sound retrofit for it and want it to be worthed it.Do the loco and cars come with couplers that are specific to this consist? Thanks for any comment.
MR has posted a product review on Kato´s GS4.

What more do you need to know?
Its a Kato…
The best steamers made in N.
I can only share what I have heard or read as I have the Concor version. From what I have read everyone that has submitted info about thier Kato GS4 has liked the unit for pulling power, looks, and smooth running operation. I have heard the the Concor will pull more but its also $120 more. If I were to do it again I would get the Kato.
Go for it.
Hope this helps.
I am in HO, but purchased one of the N scale Kato GS4’s and train. It is really a great running locomotive and it looks very good overall. If only Kato would make us more HO in addition to their great N scale models

I’ll echo CaZephyr: Had a chance to watch the Kato over at my LHS. All I can say is that if Kato were to produce it in HO, nobody else would even NEED to. Beautiful running loco, smooth, quiet, powerful, very responsive in all speed ranges. And handsome as all get-out!
You N-scalers really lucked out on your “Daylights”. We HO’ers are still waiting. And waiting–
and waiting and waiting–[:-^]

thats the thing i love most about kato. Its all n scale. I own most of the super chief set, and must say it is the best equipment i own.
Thanks guys for your answers to my query. In fact,it is what I expected from a Kato but being a substantial investment,I wanted to be reassured.Unfortunately,I’m not a mag subscriber so was denied access to their review but I’m still very satisfied with your comments.
I’ve been contemplating this product for a while now but kept away from it because I felt that the loco, with its Daylight colors, was somewhat restricted to this specific train and would look pretty weird heading up a freight train. Now Kato is offering it in black livery wich makes it more interesting, being more versatile.I’ll be ordering a set some time in a close future.
Jacktal:
If you get the “Daylight” colors on your GS-4, don’t worry. Southern Pacific used the GS’s in Daylight livery for fast freight between San Francisco and Los Angeles, also. The “GS” classification meant “General Service”. They were dual-service locomotives.
