Kato Turnout Control Switches vs. Alternatives?

I am using Kato Electric Turnout’s on my HO layout (running DCC), and trying to figure out what to do. Currently I’m using a Bachmann DCC transformer (came with engine), and am trying to find what is the best solution for

  • Controlling the Kato turnouts? Should I use the Kato Turnouts?

  • Transformer? The Bachmann is fine now, but can change that also if there is a better system out there to go with the trunout controllers…

Any advice? What should I use?

SINCE I don’t have your Bachmann “DCC Transformer” or Kato switches I cannot give you good advice -

but - it seams to me that Kato track products would offer more dependable operation, (based on what our members say), and I think Kato turnouts are an integrated design, part of, and require using their roadbed. Good track is important. Engines come and go.

Your Bachmann DCC POWER PAK - if it came with the train - probably doesn’t have enough ‘oomph’ (Volt Amperes) to do much else, So an improved DCC Command station (or power booster) may be in your future.*

No matter - enjoy what you have for now - Grow, and make future puchases based on what you decide you may need - then.

* ‘‘Transformers’’, being AC devices as assciated with ‘Lionel’ or ‘Toy’ trains. DCC is much more complex and up-to-date. It’s Digital Control which Commands the engine.

‘DIGITAL COMMAND CONTROL’… hence the name ‘DCC’.

The transformer guy just turns a knob.

Any advice on a DCC Command Station? Do DCC Command Statiosna lso have the ability to control switch turn outs?

I think you need to read up a bit on DCC. Take a look at the information available at www.tonystrains.com on DCC. There’s a pretty good basic fact sheet there.

I don’t know much about Kato turnouts, but any turnout that you want to run with DCC requires a device called a “stationary decoder” to control it. That is typically not provided with the turnout.

Most of us, even guys like me who love our DCC systems, still run turnouts the old fashioned way. I power mine from an old train transformer, off the AC accessory line. I have a track schematic diagram with toggle switches at each of the turnouts. For me, that’s just easier than fumbling with the throttle and trying to remember which address controls which turnout. But, that’s a personal decision, and I’m sure there are modellers who feel exactly the other way.
