I want to replace the ‘stock’ couplers on my P2K Southern E6 AB and I’m not sure if the standard #5 Kaydee would be correct. The stock couplers seem to have a bit longer ‘shaft’. Would the #5 be the one or should I get another?

Ok thanks. I found the following on the website:
“EMD E-6 A & B … Pilot 26, Ends 23, Use 455 for close coupling”
by ends I’m guessing they mean the rear end of the A unit and the front and rear of the B.
Jarrell
Yep, unless you want the A/B units to prototypically close couple, then use the 455 between the A/B units, and the 23 on the back of the B unit.

For close coupling and/ or diapham use, you have to consider a minimun radius. Don’t know the min radius for close coupled E6A/B, but would guess about 24". Stewart “F"s with Kadee 450s and American Limited diaphams will handle a 24”.

Jerrell,
Here’s a topic W/ pics that I posted awhile back. It’s about a conversion that I did
on a P2K E6A/B. I even got a reply from Sam Clarke of Kadee.
Good luck, Dave

I replaced the couplers on some ancient Athearn F7’s with Kadee #5’s on the rear of each engine, but I needed #26’s on the front to accomodate the longer shaft length. They still end up pretty close-coupled, but I can run them on 18-inch radius curves. I did end up drilling and tapping new mounting holes for the rear couplers, but that was to keep the draft gear out of the axles.
FWIW…I used the Kadee close couplers on my P2K FA/B’s, and they do just fine on 18 inch curves!
