keeping it short....

Do engines have mirrors?

No, not for make-up, sillies! Side mirrors? Just like trucks and cars?

Mookie

Seems like I’ve seen them on some switch engines… Most engines with a control stand vs a console are pretty much bi-directional - the engineer can look either forward or back with about equal ease. Thus little need.

I am thinking maybe yard engines would have them and OTR wouldn’t or wouldn’t use them if they did.

Ok - I have been looking at your notice at the bottom - what is a microferroequinologist - little ferrets and horses?

Curious Mook

The new ones often come with them. Unfortunately, the railroads haven’t been able to figure out how to repair/maintain them, so they often last until they break or are disfigured and removed.

Micro=Little
Ferro=Iron
Equine=Horses
ologist=One who studies (or in this case, plays with)

As compared to a Ferroequinologist (studies the big ones), or a ferroequinarcheologist, who studies old ones.[8D]

I have been honored with a few cab rides and the engines I have been on do come with a side mirror on both sides.
On one trip going to pick up a loaded coal train we ran long hood forward and the engineer used the mirrors extensively. This trip was on a Dash-8.

Virtally every road unit I have ever seen has had them so as to eliminate the need for the crew to stretch their necks to see back along their train.

I used to like facing the way I was going, but the RR replaced the small seats with these huge captain’s chairs. If you could turn the chair around, you wouldn’t be able to reach the controls because of the big back. For years now, I’ve been facing forward and using the mirrors.

And I’ll have you know, MizMoo, I don’t need makeup. My face is PERFECT!

Actually, Jenny,
The above excersise in self absorbtion is exactly why they dont have vanity mirrors on the sun visors, but do have big rear view side mounted mirrors.
This way, while watching themselves in the side mirrors, engineers may accidentaly look at the rest of the train![:D]

Nice response Ed.

Jenny,
I think you just suffered a case of
macro-appendage-extendis,
commonly reffered to as
a lot of leg pulling.[:D]
Ed

You sir, unlike some others here, make me laugh. Thanks

I know that SD70MACS have small mirrors just near the window, because i’ve seen them when i sat in the cab of one of those. They are so cute, they look like little ears…[:)]

Ed:

It’s a good thing you can be relatively anonymous here. I’m guessing your hoggers are not on here somewhere scheming-up a comeback for that one.

Mudchicken

Well,
I am on vacation for another week,
and like most marsupials, my engineer has a short memory rentention,
so even If you could get him off the seat / out of the pouch long enough to read the forum, he would forget by the time I get back.
Stay Frosty,

OK Guys - since I started this episode of “Laugh-In” - I got the idea from watching 3 OTR engines. He pulled past some dwarf lights with the engines. There were two men on the head-end. One had to get off and go really close to the dwarf lights and watch them. (the dwarfs face east and it was early in the morning - the sun was very bright) Then when they changed, he radioed the head end and swung up on the 3rd unit. They backed up and went down a different track. (Remember we have 6 of them just going into the yard)

However, if it would have been dark, the head-end could have had a mirror, checked the dwarf in the mirror and backed up w/o making that poor, cute young man get off the engine and walk those 3 engine lengths!

The engines use to have mirrors on both sides one for the engineer side and then the conductor had one also. but the conductor would never get off the engine so they took that side off. see they are jelouse that we still have a mirror and work with it . the problem with the dwarf signal is that all 9 guys had to be there so they could job brief as to what the aspect was of the signal. they pulled out their flash cards ( which they took home and had there wife write go and whoa on) match the picture to it and decided they could move. and dont worry about the guy walking 3 engines he probley didnt have a idea he could count that high.

Oh Wabash - now you went and did it - my eye makeup is running!
