Since privatization, the commuter service operated (by a succession of operators, now First Capital Connect) has steadily improved, both in frequency and in condition and comfort of rolling stock. For example, off peak service at my dad’s stop has gone from every 30 minutes to every 20 and the seats changed from ratty city bus type to high back fabric covered 2-3 seating that’s probably better than anything operated by a US commuter operator. Now the Themslink project will increase journey possibilities. Go-Ahead group has a great reputation as an operator in Britain and foresee improvements.
Its too bad Keolis couldnt take over the Illinois state sponsored trains. Indiana has pared its own trains to one; Wisconsin has none with the exception of shared costs incurred with Illinois’ Hiawathas.
CHRISTOPHE PARKER: you neglect to mention that the UK has the highest rail passenger fares in Europe.
