I am quite impressed with the layout plan of the Kettle Valley Rairoad and the video as well. As an avid
CPR and GN Modeler I could not help but notice that the 2-8-0 steam engine in the video is not a CPR model, but looks like a GN 2-8-0.
Also, sad to say that CPR ran C-Liners one the Kettle Valley as well as the Okanagon and Kootenays
Although,I can’t really comment,on the correct use of the steamers, for I have a lot but never got into, who had what,or when,I will agree that it is an impressive layout, the use of the back-drop scenery, gives it another dimension, blended in very well…
What is ironic is that The Great Northern Railroad was the reason the Kettle Valley Railroad was built. The Great Northen serviced the bulk of Southern BC’s mining industry. Eventually Great Northern pulled out, but for a while they even shared trackage.
That is why seeing a GN 2-8-0 instead of a CPR steam engine is so amusing to me. The Belpair firebox is the big giveway as to the origin. Ten Wheelers and early 2-8-0 Connies were the main engines used in the Kettle Valley. A few CPR 2-10-0’s were also used mainly as pushers.
In the hard copy magazine story for the video/article it states that that locomotive is a Great Northern leased to the CP. Great article and railway even though he used some “artistic license” about how big Penticton is, the Penticton Waterfront, and the fact that the Kettle Valley Railway is (was) not in the Rockies, it was actually about two mountain ranges to the west. Still enjoyed it very much.
I wasn’t going to say anything, but that was definitely something that bugged me! A lot of the facts are close, but not quite. Still, I try not to criticize because it’s a beautiful layout, and that he doesn’t model in the same style as me doesn’t take away from it one bit.
I noticed that the other steamer in the article is painted as a CP but, it’s not 6275. My avatar is the real 6275 and it’s preserved under cover in Goderich, ON; just over an hour’s drive away. Problem is, the only available models are brass.
That said, as long as he’s enjoying his layout, that’s what counts.
