Large layout - update

My old user name was XMarine. Delray1967 requested update on old post from me on my large yard design request… The yard design was assisted by a KCS employee that designs yards for the railroad (a friend from high school). The first stage (35’X20’) of the 83’X20’ layout is at the point of only needing final little details added. Second stage (10’X8’) bench work has been started. The layout is still a lone wolf adventure. Since I am 100% VA disabled and my doctors say the time and work on the layout is helping me, they want me to continue building the layout. My wife sends me to the layout room almost everyday, I think to get me out of her way in the house. In case anyone does not know, we own a commerical building on the main street in downtown Deshler, NE which is were the layout room is located (not in my home). The layout room is one of the old showrooms of the building. Anytime I am in the layout room it is open to the public free of charge, I average 20 people per month visiting. I do not advertise the layout since it is not a business.

Welcome back, and thank you for your service!

Welcome again to the MR forum, Glad to hear that this activity is therapeutic…

Thanks for the update! Really glad to hear you’re still at it and sharing with the public.

In the Coolie Lake (sp?) area of Michigan, someone bought an old grocery store and filled it with an O scale layout depicting the Chicago area (in the 50’s I think). Very impressive, not just the size, but the computer control, detail and impressive reliability (they usually have a coal drag, probably 120 cars long, with 4 modern diesels up front, a few E unit helpers mid train and a couple shoving on the rear.

Since I first saw that layout, I wondered how much HO could fit into this kind of building. Looks like you’re living my dream! A great big thumbs up and thank you for serving our country…I hope your health continues to improve. If I wasn’t in Ohio, I’d be helping you with your layout every weekend!
