Las Vegas train spotting

All,

I am going to be in Las Vegas in late april/early may for about 7 days. Is there any recommended locations to see/photo train units coming through the Vegas area? Driving is not a problem if no more than 2 hours.

I appreciate anything anyone has to offer.

Thanks - Mike

If you’re staying on the Strip you won’t even need to drive. I got this shot last May on the day my son was married- just walked west on Sahara Blvd. from the Sahara Hotel where we were staying.

Oh, and welcome to the forums![#welcome]

Our trip will be taking us through there. Hadn’t planned on much in the way of sightseeing, but may have to rethink that.

From Las Vegas … NORTH: The Apex - Garnet area is scenic. SOUTH: The Sloan area has a semi-horseshoe curve. Two hours south, there is the famed Cima Hill, with a lonely desert road adjacent the tracks for 15-20 miles. (Cima-Kelso)

If you are a photographer … An exhibit of the late super famed non-railroad photographer Ansel Adams is on display until May 11, 2007 at the Bellagio complex.

Wyoming Ave. Just a little east & north of the Stratasphere. Plenty of room to take pix. Click on the link in my signature then the Nevada gallaries to see pix from that site

The grade crossing at Blue Diamond Rd (NV-160), which is south of town and a few miles west of I-15 would be a good spot. Be warned that there isn’t any shade near the grade crossing.

Thanks to everyone for the info (and for the welcome to the newbie)! We will be staying at the Palms, then our condo/timeshare just south of the airport. Since i will have plenty of time, I am hoping to hit all the places mentioned so far. The wife and I got to photograph Red Rocks last year, so this year hoping for something a bit different, and why not take advantage of the love of trains while I am at it?!

Thanks again all!

If U really want to get what I think is the ultimate train watching experience breeze 2 hours SW down I15 (get off at the Peggy Sue diner exit & then take Daggett/Yermo road about 2 miles south to the triple tracks) to Daggett & watch the parade of BNSF & UPRR trains many going 70MPH!

again, thank you. Looks like I may actually need to take th ebig camera if I am shooting trains at speed

Anymore Ideas are great, I will be sure to post a link when I am done… THe wife and I are starting to plan out hte trip already… she laughed and told me as long as it wasn’t 5 hours away… but I think I will stick with the 2 hour rule!

Thanks again guys, it is wonderful you all took time to share with me. I do appreciate it.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a mainline right down the street from the Palms. Flamingo Road goes over the mainline (by overpass or bridge if you prefer) and is about 2 blocks to the east off of I-15.

Also, welcome to the forum.

Good Morning,

Someone had asked a similar question a while back. Here is the link to the responses posted at that time. I agree w/ the person who recommended Apex (north) and Sloan (south). My response on the attached gives a little more detail about both as well as other places.

By the way, I flew over Sloan last week on the way to LA. Pretty cool to see the curvature there from the air.

Happy hunting - take some extra water along to drink.

Hey guys…

Went up near Nellis yesterday… got some photos at the small UP yard (autoracks, a couple mixed freight with high HP loco’s and a set of helpers. Then drove back towards the AFB and cought a high speed intermodal coming at me “very” quickly… fortunately we had the camera out and ready… I wanted to post a small thank you for all the advice… Tuesday and Wednesday will have more photos for us…
