You said you have a 4x10 board, but how much total space do you have to work with? You could make 5 2x4 sections out of that board and make a much more interesting layout- longer and narrower so it seems the trains are actually going somewhere, not just in a circle. You might also want to get your hands on some layout planning software. Google xTrkCAD, it’s free and it’s pretty easy to get the hang of.
