just wondering what the average amount of space people have for their layout. ive just been told that i can finally use the entire back wall of out living room! (dad finally gave it up[:D])thats a whopping 22’. (for me thats a lot because im still on a 4x8)in HO, i can do plenty with this. i plan to have reversing loops at each end,5’ wide. the rest is going to be about 20". theres a convienent 8" wide shelf along the wall.

Sounds Great!! My Wife just let me have a spare bedroom, 10.5X10.5. (loop on each end cus I like contious running, and plenty of room for a large enough yard.)I plan to go around the room and leave a walkway by the door to get inside. I just started the bridgework a couple days ago.
My space is now 15x20 (15x15 with an 11x4.5 jut-out). It is bigger than I could ever dream for, and will certainly keep me busy for the next 4 years (After that, off to college). The best part is, I’ve finally laid my stake to it by building the benchwork. Hopefully i’ll have photos soon.
I’m also occupying another 9x8 section in another part of the basement with my old railroad.
In terms of the workshop, it flows around the south side the basement. Tool Storage and smaller tools are at one end of the basement, while Larger Saws are positioned closer to the railroad. In between is the open-work area.
I have 4 feet by 6 feet in two levels and I am in On30. So much for not having space LOL.
I am modeling in our living room.
I lucked out. My wife and I moved into a duplex with a full basement. She did say the day we looked at the place, “Oh no! You don’t get the whole thing! You get half.”
Well, half of a 33’ x 35’ basement is a lotta layout! And I did lay claim to the “big half”. [:D]
My basement is unfinished so unless and until I get into “train room shape”, I’m doing a 7ft long by 2ft wide N-scale shelf switching layout that will fit into a niche in my den.
I was planning on building an el shaped layout with another 6 to 7-foot leg, but I decided to concentrate on one for now. But it’s pseudo-modular, so I can expand from either or both sides if I do move it to the basement eventually.
My HO rr walkout basement space has an unusual shape, but the main part of the rr room is 60’ x 15’ - sorta narrow, but the 60 foot length makes for long runs between switching areas. I am also building an S scale industrial switching layout in what had been my workshop -that area adjoins the main part of the basement and is about 13 x 13. I removed the doors and cut through a wall so that the “mainline” on the S scale rr is about 35 or 40’. The laundry room is upstairs on the main level. I share the basement with a bathroom and the utility room. Nice.
