LGB Uintah Questions??

Hello everyone. I have a few questions for you.

I just recieved a new LGB uintah #50. I have been wanting to get one for years and picked this one up for a steal. It has never been run and used only for display. So here are some of my questions for those who have this engine:

  1. Sound. I wanted to buy #51 with sound but they are too expensive for my liking. Can someone tell me what sound system LGB used and if it is still available. If not I will probably end up using a pheonix system. Also, if you have tips or pictures of the installation that would be great.

  2. Owners Manual/Instructions. I keep all the information for my LGB equipment. Because this was used, and the owner passed away, it no longer has this nformation and the seller has no idea where it is. If anyone still has this, is it possible for you to make a copy and send it to me?

  3. Parts The last picture shows what extra parts came in the box. Are the plows part of the uintah or are they for something else? This was sold at an estate sale so there were parts and boxes everywhere and they could have got mixed in.

  4. Detail. Finally, can some of you post pictures of your Uintah. I know some have detailed them and I would love to see your work.

hi there,i have one of these lovely beasts,no51,with lgb sound,these are good solid units for hours of power,the lgb sound unit is awsome,and loud,the only lgb sound thats available that i know of is the newer module type,which will fit in most tenders,but the sound for the uinatah,is probabally different,as it is more like a mallet.i have installed the american lgb steam sound in my 38ton shay,i know not prototype,but it works well.also go lgbusa web,you can download info for your no50,from there.cheeers,peter in auzzie,ps i paid in us dollars for my no51 $850.00,including post,from your country,there is one,brand new i know of,also a 51 sound,for$1700.00 in auzzie,again cheers.

The cow catcher (plow) on the right looks like one modified from bachmann 4-6-0 [%-)]

Yes, I love this engine and always have. I was able to pick this one up for $450 US. That is not to bad considering it has never been run. I can find these engines at hobby shops around here for around $970-$1200. (#50) You can still get#51 for $1375-$1899. I am only a junior in high school and those prices are way too high for me!!!

I agree that the cow catcher on the right does not belong with the uintah. It must have gotten mixed in.

Hi Michael,

LGB does not sell sound boards separate. You would have to go with a LGB ad on unit like the one mentioned in a prior post or a pheonix system, ect.

The Uintahs did not come with cow catchers in the box so my guess is that they got mixed in somehow. The other two small parts look like air hoses maybe from the back of the loco or off some kind of a tender.

Thank you gtrainman1. I got the manuals from the LGB site. You also answered all my questions as to the parts.

Here is my next question. From my understanding, for LGB sound I will need:

  1. 65001 American steam sound unit

  2. 65011 Power storage unit (I use analog power, so I will need this)

  3. 65012 Function Trigger

Does anyone know how much these cost and where I can get them? Are they still available? g_scail_downunder, you said you have one so you might know. Thanks again.

I did a Mogul with the three parts you list. The “Chuff” works off the applied voltage.

For parts, you might try Massoth Electronics, add on page 120 of the February “Garden Railways”.

Sorry don’t own one, love to though. Wounder if anyone has done a rebuild into any of these.
