lighting ideas

i am building a double decker ho scale layout and wonder if anyone has any ideas on what lights work the best. I also wonder if anyone has a good place to shop for lights. my layout is 20x25 both up and down. Wondered about under cabnit lighting but looks expensive. Ideas would be great thanks.

The old standby florescent tubes always worked for me. You can by them in 2’, 4’, & commericially 8’ lengths in single, two or 4 tube wide configurations with some bare with no covers and other with built in difusers… They don’t get hot and they mount behind valances and other such partitions easily to be out of sight.

New LED puck lites are on the market that can shed some great down light in tight spaces as well.

Both types are more cost effective than incandesant light bulbs.

After installing under kitchen cabinet lights – Guess where? – Under the kitchen cabinets – There is serious consideration to use this type of compact lighting on the CR&T as well.

I would recommend staying away from those under cabinet puck lights as most of them are Halogen and produce a great amount of heat.not to mention use a lot of wattage as well. There’s no question that the only way to go is either fluorescent tubes of CFL bulbs in screw in sockets. Check out this link to Cliff Powers MA&G in the construction photos you will see how Cliff employed the use of CFL Bulbs. I have since replaced every bulb in my track lights with CFL bulbs as I don’t need any more heat in the train room and not to mention wish to give any more of my money to JCP&L my power company.
