Lionel 182 Crane cable spool question.

I am finally doing final assembly of a Lionel 182 Gantry Crane. When I assemble the cable spool to the base the spool seems to ride on the base.

I do know there is a spring between the drive gear and the platform. Should there be a washer or spring between the spool and the base?

Kurt

Sorry, but I’m going to bump this one up.

Posted last night and I woke up and it’s about to go off the first page.

(bump)

Man I restored a bunch of those about 20 years ago, The greenberg repair book I have does not show the 165 or 182 but does show the 282 which is a little different but the 282 does not show a speing between the spool and the crane platform.

Where is it rubbing? I also have a 182 and a 165 I can look at/well take apart maybe???

The base of the spool seems to be resting on the platform. It seems like there should be some space in there, but I don’t know if there should be a washer, coller, or thrust bearing on the spool shaft.

I have the parts list from Olson’s, but I don’ see any mention of a part here. The springs and bearings are all accounted for in the list.

PS Thanks Jim!

Ok, looked at the 182 that was in pieces and the 165 that is complete and ran before I clipped the wires.

The spool on the 182 has dirty a ring around the outer edge bottom side as though it was dragging or at least close and catching grime buildup. The bottom the the spool is not flat, there is a slight shoulder machined into it on the bottom leaving the effect of a small thin washer on the bottom side. In looking at the 165, I can see very little space under the spool and the free movement is up, not down. This is verified by looking underneath at the other end of the shaft where the gear is installed. One of the heavier springs is installed between the gear and the gear train base. I took a few pics but they suck, I’ll try again if you need them, but I think you’ll be alright. Just don’t mix up the springs, the real light ones are only for the solenoid returns the heavies go to keep the two shafts pulled down. It is important to keep those main gears meshed correctly. Man, my crane is DIRTY, needs some mister CLEAN!

Thanks for looking!

No need to send pics. I have them from before I dissassembled, but I didn’t take any of the spool assembly.

Best guess is that the spool is pushed up by the gears underneath when it operates, and doesn’t need additional bearings at the top.

Thanks again,

Kurt
