Looking to add a post war, or even pre-war, steam locomotive with a two position E unit to my collection. Any suggestions? I’d like to stay away from the scout engines that have the plastic motors that are very difficult to service. any ideas are welcome. Thanks.
I have two engines, a 1949 Lionel 2026 and a 1945 Lionel 1666 in my collection, I’m no Lionel expert so I don’t know if the e unit you are talking about is the one with “Forward-stop-reverse-stop” cycle. But these have great pulling power and are very reliable.
The two-position one is just forward-reverse-forward-reverse, it doesn’t have the neutral in between. See page 3:
Looking for one without the neutral position. I have a 2026, agree it’s a good unit.
This is exactly the information I needed! Thank you.
So now, I have narrowed down my search to all the locomotives with the 101 series E units. Some of them have the good serviceable motors, some of them have the nightmare unserviceable ones. Anyone have any suggestions from that list? I prefer something heavy with a metal shell versus a plastic shell. 202, 212, 219 225, 228, 229, 230, 231, 243, 244, 247,249 seem to be the candidates.
Edit: it looks like all these locomotives have plastic shells, so that’s not going to be a consideration. I think I’m leaning toward the 243.

Are all die-cast 2 position reverse.
Cool man, thanks!
I know what the books say, but my 239 from 1965 (J C Penney set) had a neutral position.
