I need some advice. My postwar gang car overheats all the time. The brush holders get so hot, they cannot be touched. I tore down the car twice now, cleaned the commutator with a scotchbrite pad, cleaned slots in commutator, degreased gearbox with citrus cleaner and relubed with 3 in one oil. Brushes were also cleaned in contact cleaner. Previous time, I lubed with white lithium grease. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Anyone out there run a gang car?
I have a ‘newer’ one with a slide pickup - not sure how old it is - but it tended to run a bit hot - nothing like you’re experiencing though. I ended up running it on its own loop at very low power.
I read somewhere about 5 years ago or so that there not designed to run for long periods and actually about 20 minutes or less at a time . If there on a layout that would run continues it is best to set them up on some type of time where they came on about every 30 minutes for about 15 minutes.
Actually I remember now just which mag not sure but it was actually about the trolley and they had caused fires ( a few ) or melted because of continuous running and they brought up the fact that the 50, 52, 55,68 and trolley and I believe they went to Infact state all the small engines from that period had a habit of getting hot . There made for short runs and displays not continuous running
