Lionel 6-8632 4-4-2 Is it real???

This may be a stupid question, does anyone out there own Lionel 6-8632… The reason I ask is that I want to bid on this train it comes with 5 other cars but I can’t find anything on this model.

Should I spend the money or does this sound like a scam for 65.00

thanks

YES, the loco is real and I have a couple. It’s the standard basic die-cast steam loco that has come with a majority of beginner Lionel sets for the past 17 years.

These are well running reliable locos that look and run great on smaller layouts. They’re not full-scale proportion so they look good with traditionally sized Lionel starter set cars.

IF the loco has been well cared for and not abused, $65 would be a good price, especially with 5 additional cars. BUT some questions to ask or things to look for:

-Does smoke unit still work? (around $20 to replace, providing you do it yourself)

-Does reverse circuit board still work? (around $15 to replace, doing it yourself)

-Are the gears worn or stripped? The gears are plastic BUT if you lube them regularly they’ll be fine. Otherwise, they can be stripped causing the loco to run irratically in one direction or the other, or both.

Again, if you can do repairs yourself fine (or have a knowledgable train buddy who could help or do a trade). If you have to pay a dealer to make the repairs, then you might as well buy something brand new.

Yes, it’s for real. Made in 1999 or so as part of several starter sets. It came in the following roadnames: New York Central, C&O, Lionel Lines and Santa Fe. Be sure to ask which one is for sale here if you care!
