Lionel 8516 & similar?

What other road numbers did Lionel put on the modern 70s & newer 0-4-0 switcher engine besides the 8516 that I have? I thought mine didn’t run until I plugged in the tender. I like running multiple engines on my layout that has mostly 042 & 054 curves. No 027 curves. Do they all have a strong wobble from the side rod motion?

A picture would really help in identifying exactly the type of 0-4-0. NYC 0-4-0 from 1985 is as far as a price guide tells me. Certain types have roots all the way back to the prewar era.

Wow thats a bunch. I wonder if all of them have metal engine bodies? I was thinking of selling mine but I really fell in love with it once I plugged in the tender and ran it with several other 4-4-2 modern can motor Lionel steam engines.

The pictures illustrate the need to be exact. There are 2 totally different engines pictured in the line up. Which of them resembles the type you own?

I have one 8516.

The 8516 is one of those engines that basically has remained the same since prewar times. It’s ancestor is Lionel’s 0-6-0 non scale switcher of the Pennsylvania RR B6 style. In fact you’ll find “B6” embossed on the right front of the boiler. After the war the wheel configuration changed to 0-4-0 and to the best of my knowledge all variations of the same boiler shell were cast metal. The slope back tender has had material changes throughout the years…beginning with cast metal and more recently of plastic. I believe the motor change came about in the '80’s and required the rectangular casting on the left side of the boiler.
