I recently bought a nice little lionel 2-4-0 8902 switcher. Now I dont now much at all about fixing trains but im trying to learn. It seems as if the train is “confused” and dosnt know weather to go backwards or forwards. It spazes out between the two just stays in one spot shaking back and fourth. Whats wrong?
Unlike most Lionel locomotives, it has a DC motor and will run only with a DC supply, not a transformer. They can be modified in various ways to be run on AC. Continuing to try to run it on AC will burn out the motor.
Oh wow, I cant believe the guy at the store didnt tell me that! Jeez the nerve of some people.
There is another current topic on the same subject:
Hello Bill!
Perhaps the Store Owner thought you had a Transformer that is compatible for your 8902?? A MRC D.C. Transformer would work well for your 8902 or you can order an Electronic Reverse Unit from Lionel also that Changes AC to DC. Brianel is a guru with these type of Engines & I’m sure he would be willing to help out also. Take Care.
