Lionel Electrocoupler Power

I was looking at sticking some Electrocouplers in one of my locomotives, and I had a question. Basically, I wanted to know–from anyone who owns spare couplers–if I can actually power the couplers themselves–just the solenoid–on DC. I’m not certain, and obviously DC does not always play nicely with AC devices, but I’d think that it would work…
Yes, I’m preparing for the ridicule.
Also, does anyone know the voltage range that they’ll reliably work on?

Wasn’t there a prewar Lionel switcher that did couplers like this?

My understanding is that Lionel’s early postwar coil couplers (and the remotely controlled “electronic set” versions) were very much like the actual modern Electrocouplers, though obviously the control mechanism is no longer the same. I don’t know about the Prewar era having stuff like that, especially since that era is very much out of my knowledge zone.
