I asked this question in the general discussion forum. Respectfully my question might be answered in this forum. Although I currenty model in HO, my younger days in the 1960’s were purely Lionel.
My first engine was the Lionel GG1 in a very dark green. I believe that it had 2 motors inside.
It picked up current from the 3 rail track.
My question is: can this engine also pick up current from the two pantographs on top of the engine as the protype would do?
I no longer have the engine.
Yes it could, you removed the wire from the pickup rollers and attached it to the pantographs. they we designed for a quick change even had a solder lug attached.
To answer your question: Yes. The postwar Lionel GG-1 can take power from either track or overhead wiring.
I might add that it works better with a stronger spring in the pantograph. Other than that, they work great. That hard part is building a good looking operating catenary system!
