Lionel MPC GG-1 Nylon gears

I remember reading in CTT about the Lionel MPC GG-1’s use of nylon gears in the driving truck. I have retained all my CTT’s. Is there an index of articles were I could ferret out exactly which month/year the article was in?, or does anyone know which models are nylon

Regards, Bob

Hello Lionelbob! The GG-1 You are referring to was made in 1977 & had the Nylon Gears. It was Tuscan Red in color with Gold Lettering & Stripes. It was also the first & only GG-1 with the nylon gears too & was a poor seller as The Armature Shafts were made a bit too long & as a result a hole had to be drilled into the bottom of the Trucks to compensate for the extra length & Grease from the Worm Gear inside the Truck leaked out onto the middle rail & buyers were very unhappy with their purchase of the above engine. To this day that particular GG-1 is not worth much $$$$$$$ & always sells for less than postwar or modern versions that are improvements over the 1977 version. Take Care.

Use a dab of Lucas Red 'N Tacky #2 grease on the worms after cleaning out all of the old stuff and you won’t have to worry about “leaking”. That stuff is hard to throw off.

First, thanks to all who replied.

I scanned the CTT magazine archives (on trains.com) and came up with a hit on the Sept 1994 issue. (I saved all my issues). It confirms that indeed the Lionel MPC 8753 GG1 was offered in 1979, with nylon gears. This particular letter was from a guy that had either gotten an early 8850 (Black 1978-79) or a intermediary switched shells, but he was stuck with an 8753 frame, and an 8850 body.

I’ll just shop for the later models and stay away from the 8753.

Oh, and Iwill remember to check the number on the frame.

On the tuscan 1977 model watch tour strips they were of very poor quality too.

Hello Lionelbob! The 8753 was only offered in 1977,Not 1979. In 1978-79 Lionel offered the Blackjack Penncentral GG-1 which had metal gears & correct Armature Shaft Lenghts & was a Improvement Mechanically over the previous version. However, this was also a poor seller as it was very bland in looks. Lionel hit the Jackpot in 1981 when the next GG-1 was Brunswick Green & was the best looking GG-1 Lionel had ever made up to that time. The 81 version is hard to get these days & sells for more $$$$$$$ than the previous versions. Take Care.

Sorry, the 1979 reference was a typo, the 8753 was made in 1977.

Do you know the 4 digit stock number of the Brunswick Green 1981 version?

On the subject of GG-1’s, i remember i had a catalog from the mid to late 80’s. In it was a georgous gold GG-1 with matching caboose. Absolutly beautiful. Does anybody know the road number of that locomotive, i would love to get one, but i dont have that catalog anymore. It was like a metallic gold, and im pretty sure it was a Pensylvania loco.

Hello Lionelbob! The stock # for the Green GG-1 from 1981 is 8150 & Trainworld in Brooklyn has one for sale @ $395.00! Lionel Mougli- The Gold GG-1 you are thinking about is from 1987 & the number for that is #18300 & Joe Gryzobski in Scranton,Pa has one on his website for $295.00 Take Care.

Thanks Keith, BTW, there’s an interesting thread going on over on the 3-rail trains.com forum, if you are interested.

Duh, an interesting thread about the same subject, it might be called MPC GG1 plastic gears

$400 is a bit steep for a 1981 green GG1. The bottom fell out of them with the new Williams, Railking, and K-line models. from. Shop around and you should find on for around $300. I’ve seen them for as low as $250 mint in box. They are a nice GG1. Diehard postwar mechanicals with sweet modern era decoration.
