Does anyone know of a source, online or elsewhere, showing part diagram break down drawings of the 1980’s version of their “SD-28 Flat Top Diesel”? Was also looking for the part diagram for the truck assembiles for their 1980’s era F-3 diesels. I found the F-3 shell, frame, & motors on the Lionel web site but not the trucks as seen broken down into parts. Let me know, thanks,
Truck assembly breakdown is in a different part of the Supplements. I’m looking at the GreenBerg Lionel Modern era Diagrams and Parts lists. The trucks are in the back of the book, pages 451-549.
The diagrams for the SD-28 may be folded into the material for the SD-18 as these were made with pullmore as well as vertical can motors.
Some of that older stuff will be hit or miss on Lionel’s web site but if you know enough about the trains to identifiy a modern loco, for example a postwar celebration F-3 and know that your 80’s F-3 loco is the same you may have some luck. But, this is chancy because you will have to be able to recognize any design differences. If your F-3 is a vertical twin motor F-3, one of these later PWC loco parts diagrams should get you close.
Also as cited, the old Greenburg books of postwar parts lists are pretty good as well. Not sure what you need off the diesel truck, but couplers, skirts, wheels, axles and gears are all available. You will want to be careful that youknow wether you have an MPC era engine with aluminum wheels and traction tires or a later 80’s loc with the more traditional postwar style wheels and magnatraction.
Guess I’m saying you can have some luck looking backwards to find your info, but you must have some basic knowledge or be careful!
So for your SD 28 info, maybe look at the 1997 Conrail SD-20 with diecast trucks and a pullmore motor, might be close.
The material in the book is in the supplements, it’s just harder to find because of the way the electronic versions are organized. I will see if I have hard copy of the pages and then post the material you would need to download from Lionel. BTW the book is often available at train shows for list price.
I’ve been at every train show & hobby shop in town for the last 20 years and never seen this book. Most vendors in this area like to bring all their junk to the shows and then pack it back up at 5PM. Something good like that would be off the table and in someone’s bag within the first 2 minutes of any show around here.
What am I missing on the Lionel web site about those supplements? How do you know which ones you’re looking for? Do you have to download all of them to find out what’s in them or is it listed on the web site somewhere?
The Modern Era guide shouldn’t be that valuable/rare. I’ve seen at the book tables along with a lot of other early Kalmbach/Greenberg early publications. Yes, you need to download almost all of the supplements as stuff is forward and referese referenced. This was somewhat true of the Post War stuff as well. I have them on CD ROM. If I can’t ID the supplements, I will scan in the appropriate pages and email the pdf files to you.
Thanks Rob, most of the information he is looking for is in Sup 1-9. There is additional material in Sup 14 (parts list for the SD-18), Sup 15 (can motored version of the SD-18) and some more material on the F-3’s in Supps 17 & 20.
