Lionel Polar Express Transformer?

Need advice on what kind of transformer to get to power a large Lionel Polar express layout. Using Gargraves 3 rail Phantom track. Should i use a CW-80? Should i solder directly to underside of track? Should i solder track sections together since its a permanent wall-mounted layout or are the Gargraves connection pins good enough. Thanx in advance!!!

You will want look into the MRC line of Power Packs. I am not familiar with their Three Rail options, but they make some options that put out some serious power.

as for the track. You will want to solder feeter wilres every two or three sections, assuming its flex trak. If not solder feeders every approxamate two or three flex trak lengths. You will want to solder the joints between all sections of track. While the connection will be good and relaible for a while. Personal expereince has shown me that over a while oxidation and just plain expasnion and contraction and traffic wear and tear will cause the rail joints to become open just eneugh it has trouble passing current. Soldering eliminates that problem forever.

I wish I could be of more help. But hopefully I can get you started.in the right direction.
