Is there any way to make the Lionel CW 80 the 80 watt transformer run MTH engines?
What is the problem you are having? If not reversing is the problem, then add a lighted car to the track or hook a lamp post to track power.

I regularly run MTH Proto 1, LocoSound, and “conventional” engines on my layout using the CW-80 with no problems.

The engine will not come out of neutral using the direction button, or the programming sequence in the manual. Everything, sound smoke etc. work. There is track bumper lighting already on the track. This was a problem for my K-line that the bumpers solved, however my dealer tells me that transformer will never run an MTH locomotive because of the bell programming of the transformer. So I was looking for any ideas. It is a Proto sound 2 unit.
I do not believe it has anything to do with “the bell programming of the transformer”. This transformer uses a crop sine wave, which is the problem. Older Lionel transformers used a pure sine wave design, along with MTH and MRC.
I also believe that it never comes to ‘0’ voltage when using the directional control.
Try it with a lighted car on the track as Jim H. suggested, just as a test.

The problem is not with the MTH engin. I have some Lionel engins that have this problem. The trouble is with the Lionel control and the way it controls the output voltage for speed control. Loading down the output with lights as has been suggested is the best option if you intend to keep the Lionel CW80 control. Some engins have more sensitivity than others to this problem. I have no experience with any of the other transformers available as I normally use the older ones. I don’t know if any of the other ones have this problem.
I even tried it with the K-line engine on the track and couldn’t get the MTH to move. Tommorrow I will go to a different hobby store and see if I need a new transformer. I’ll let you guys know what happens. Thanks
Its the transformer. It won’t run my Proto1 and my Beep is flakey on it.
Well several issues were found when I took the engine to a service station outlet. I bought the engine brand new at full list price at a Hobbytown USA delearship near me. Someone had been inside the engine and resoldered wires to the motors and some boards were left unplugged. After going over it the engine was able to run but not on my transformer. So I purchased the MTH 1000 power supply and sold off my Lionel 80 watt transformer. In case I appreciate the help you guys came forward with. I do not think I will shop at Hobbytown USA stores again for my train needs!
The Hobbytown USA stores in my area generally chage MSRP or in some cases ABOVE MSRP for items. I only make small purchases there only when I can’t wait for shipping.
