LIONEL TYPE R TRANSFORMER ????

HI anybody know if this model can operate bells/whistles? It is an older one with dual controls

on top not side. Just thought I’d ask before I committed to it . FYI the R model is distinct from the Lionel

RW one. Thanks much Chris

The “W” indicates a whistle control. So a plain “R” means no whistle.

Bob is correct (as usual). I have an R and it doesn’t control a whistle.

I have an R, I use it on my bedroom layout. The prewar type R can control 2 trains and has throttle knobs and terminal posts for each train. It has 2 variable voltage options for each plus many fixed voltage options. It was made between 1939 and 42 and again in 46 as a 100 watt unit and 110 watts in 47. The RW came along in 48-54 as a 110 watt version with throttle 2 replaced by direction and whistle controls.

If you’re only running one train at a time, the RW is your best option. However the prewar type R has it’s merits but you’ll need either a secondary whistle controller like the 66 or 67 or a separate whistle accessory like the #125 whistle shack, which is what I use.

You could also get two Sound Activation Buttons # 610-5906-001 also better known as 6-5906 from Lionel or on E-bay and have both horn and whistle control.

Sorry Bell, horn and whistle control.

I use one with my RW for the bell

You can also roll your own whistle/bell control with a bunch of 6 amp diodes and two push buttons.
