I just got my challenger and all works fine in the analog mode except I do not see the marker lights light up. Is that a defect or did they not include it. My headlight works like it says and so does the backup light.
Also I have 3985 with coal tender and do not see any firebox glow is that left out also as is the cab light.
It is no big deal as it is on a roller base for dimenstration only, just curious.
Dave. thanks for any info. Sure is a beautiful model for only 260 bucks.
I got mine a few weeks ago, and all seemed to work as indicated, but I’m also using DCC. By “marker” lights, do you mean numberboard lights? Mine is not a coal burner, so I can’t tell you about the firebox glow, but my numberboard lights do work.

The markers should light, but the Lionel engines have various problems. I know of at least six engines from out local group that ran very poor. If your engine runs well, be glad. My engine had the marker lights, but the headlight does not work. It ran so poorly that the lighting was not even considered at the time. Lionel did replace one of the six engines that I mentioned and the new one ran just like the other five, which is not good. I worked on the running qualities of my engine and got it to run fairly well with a few adjustments and 20 hours or so of running in on rollers.
I have one and everything works excellently except the whistle – I don’t know if a real Challenger had such a horrible sounding whistle as the Lionel model. The numberboards light up, there is a firebox glow from the sides of the engine, and the headlight and backup light come on according to the direction of travel. I run mine only on DCC, so I can’t say what happens when it is running on DC block control.
Cacole try and watch a video of UP 844, 3985 and you will hear the whistle and it is right on the nose. Dave
My Athern sd-9 has a realy bad grinding sound and i have loubed it but it is still there and i do not know were it is coming from. Can any of you help me?
Maybe the lights in the marker lights are burned out or the wires came loose?
1: Check to see that there is no flash (bits of tabs and stuff leftover from molding) on the driveshafts. If there is, trim it off
2: My GP60 makes that sound when the motor isn’t lined up right. Check to make sure both white mounting clips are correctly mounted and that the motor is straight…
