LIRR & Brush Fire

According to CNN, LIRR is shut down east of Farmingdale due to a brush fire near the Deer Park station. Seems like the fire has interrupted signaling.

I have never been in that area, but was surprised to see a brush fire there.

I’ve never been to the area, but LI does get some good brush fires (one a couple years ago went over 600 acres). It doesn’t take much bru***o make a fire that can burn wires, etc.

Being born in western Pa. and many years in the service and living on the left side of the U.S. I didn’t know L.I. had anyyhing but buildings, but if they even have a bad trash fire it could effect operations.

Well, I have been there and there is a lot of grassland and tidal/costal swampland. Even when the grasses are wet, it does not take much to get them burning. The local Fire companies spend too much time trying to put these fires out, as they pose a threat to nearby properties as well as the LIRR.

Actually the area is/was state property south of the the old Pilgrim State Hospital. To the west was the site of the old Edgewood State Hospital which was demolished some years ago. In recent years part of the land was developed near the “new” Deer Park station into an industrial area known as Heartland Park. The rest is still as God planted it.
