Anyone remember the article in MRR I think from the late 70s? It was about a guy who used a govt surplus electric motor and hooked it up to a R.C. airplane engine to make his own power for the traction motor on his O scale engine. It was very experimental and lots of exhaust junk got blown onto the engine. But with newer 4 stroke engines and diesel conversions could something like this be done better? It never could be run inside but hey, anything for fun.
I think I might have seen that.
Today, I would think it would be possible. This is model railroading, anything is possible. They are putting gas engines into small scale RC cars, I don’t see why they can’t put it in a locomotive.

from time to time i see a hybrid in G scale on ebay goin for about 2000. nice lil settup w a .10 aircraft engine powering a fan and Dyno generator that powers the lights and the electric motors on each axle… claims to have a superquiet muffler and oil traP SYSTEM.
i believe there would be enough room in a O gauge shell and chassis to use a like system and would love to see one manufactured tho with the heat and the fuel with nitro methane i suppose it would need be all metal… chassis and shell
If you search for Pligrim locomotive works, you will find a site where garden railroad live diesel electrics powered by 4 stroke OS model engines are being built. The models don’t look all that realistic but they work. And I think they are for sale
