Did anybody here about Livonia Avon & Lakeville railroad is putting in welded rail from Lakeville to Scottsville yard? It is on some of the (former Erie& conrail line) how much will it cost for each mile of welded rail to be put in?
Hmmmm. An exam question…lol
It depends upon a number of factors, some of which are:
-
Is the rail new or relay?
-
Is it existing rail being welded in place or is the existing rail being removed and replaced?
-
What size and grade of new crossties are being installed?
-
How many miles are being installed?
-
What is the weight of the new rail?
-
Is the old rail suitable only for scrap or does it have remaining value as relay rail?
-
How will the new rail be secured?
-
Wood crossties or concrete or other?
-
How many switches involved?
-
Who is performing the work?
-
What welding method is to be used?
-
How quickly must the job be performed?
-
Are NYS or Federal Grants available?
-
How will the rail be anchored?
15 Is new ballast being added?
-
Will the existing ROW and subgrade require any work prior to installation?
-
Who will provide the rail train?
I could go on, but that’s a start. MC?? I miss anything BIG??
LC
LA&L RR is going to put welded rail in JUNE,JULY or AUGUST of this year. All of the factors are in place.
At the risk upsetting you, you did ask for the cost of the work. Simply saying the factors are in place doesn’t help LC, or anyone else estimate the cost, which I assume is why he asked you those questions…
It would be mighty difficult to put welded rail on the old LV Rochester branch, since most of it south of Mortimer is gone.(CSX ,LA&L and R&S use it for interchange, car storage, and headroom) The R&S has had welded rail from back when B&O installed it a long time ago! ( I 'm sorry I can’t say when it was done, but I know that it was) That leaves the former Erie. As for the cost of doing it, it’ll be considerable, unless they are using relay rail.
Well LA&L said it to be close to a thousand or million dollars to do.
Hey PBenHam. LA&L said they might go from lakeville into rochester on what is left of the Buffalo to Corning line.
That’s quite a spread. How many thousand or million did they say??
LA&L said it to be close to 2.9 thousand or 9.5 million dollars. They are going to put in crossing gates w/ lights and fixing the crossing at Rt251or MP372.84 on the old Buffalo to Corning line, (80 ton main swtich for Rochester Genesee Valley Railroad Museum for free). The 80 ton main swtich that RGVRRM has on the LA&L line will be taken out and might be resold back to the Rochester Genesee Valley Railroad Museum.
OK, you lost me there 2.9 thousand what?
Last guestimate I heard for track rehab (though not on the LAL) was a million a mile. Your results may vary.
Character. OOPS!!! it should be 2.9 thousand dollars
$2,900 to install welded rail on a thirty mile long segment? Why hasn’t CSX [:o)]gotten a hold of this outfit!
That’s a big question. I don’t think CSX knows that tracks from the Corning goes to Goodman yard.
I don’t think CSX knows that the track are their. After the plant shutdown in corning that’s when conrail took out most of the line from Buffalo to Corning.
First point: Very likely CSX does not know it’s their track, but I’ll bet that that [censored] Tax bill they get each year reminds them[B)]! Second point: Conrail took out most of the passing tracks in the early 90’s when they moved a big chunk of traffic over to the old New York Central. They didn’t have the best access to the old Erie out of New Jersey, a fact that Norfolk Southern noticed, and fixed, sending the traffic to the old PRR from Cleveland/Youngstown/Crestline, to the Reading crossline Harrisburg-Allentown, then the Lehigh Valley to Oak Island. They sold/leased most of the old Erie west of Hornell to the Western New York & Pennsylvania, and others, from Jamestown to Meadville. East of Binghamton, NS leased the old Erie to NYS&W’s parent Delaware Otsego, and let them deal with the “dead end” line into New Jersey. The Buffalo-Binghamton line is still NS’ FOR NOW! If some one makes the right offer, NS will dump that line. Likely Candidate #1? CP. But, CP is loath to pay the horrific taxes the NYSSR will hit them with without the benefits they get in the Great White North, where the taxes are just as bad, but they do not pay for their people’s health care, like they do here!
WHAT?! The Southern Tier Line from Corning to Buffalo is very much in place and operating daily with ever larger volumes of freight. What plant shutdown in Corning?? Conrail did not take out the Tier, ever…
Oh, and the Tier is owned and operated by the NS these days.
Conrail’s last SB run was in 1998. Buffalo to Corning line on the LA&L line their was a factory that did go out of businesss and i can’t think of the name of the factory in corning. Conrail was carring covered hopper cars to the factory.
Charater. I’m not talking about the Corning to Buffalo, but i’m talking about the (former Erie) Buffalo to Corning to the factory which was in Corning.
Charater. It is on my chapter website: http://www.rgvrrm.org there is a photo with a yard limit sign with the LA&L line in the background and video with the LA&L engines going past the old Erie depo that’s the line i am talking about.
