What would be the approximate price for a new diesel locomotive? Say an SD60MAC?
I hasten to say I am NOT in the market for one (haha), it is just to settle an ongoing argument. Thanks for the input folks-
DC traction 1.7 million
AC traction 2.3 million
Thanks, my friend. That´s what I needed to know
Chad, I’m cerious to know how you know the prices. is there a book, or do you have connections.
I’ve always said that if I won the lottery, I would move back up to Montana (where I attended MSU), buy a ranch with lots of land, then have my own 1:1 scale train loop. Wouldn’t that be cool.
Thise are pretty well standard prices. Of course discount for quantity would bring the price down. Conversly, those optional extras such as rear view mirrors, air con, metallic paint, etc. will pu***he price up a bit…
This topic has been discussed in the past. I am planning on going up to Cajon this saturday if you want to meet up.
Let me see, I’ll get back to you on that. Pasadena Model Railroad Club is going to have a big open house this weekend and I was thinking of attending that. Never been there before. I’m thinking of joining their club.
Well that would be cool. I haven’t seen there layout but I hear is pretty big. If you change your mind shoot me an e-mail and I’ll let you know where I’ll be.
Sweet, you bet I will
So, what do you guys think of my lottery Idea? I saw something on TV about guys that owned there own engines (Mostly old stuff that they were restoring).
Chad, have you seen that you can rent to drive an engine at the Perris Train Museum? It’s like $140 an hour. That’ll be cool.
Chad? Do you or anyone know how long it takes the rail companies for them to get their money back on what they spend on new locomotives. Just our of curiousity on my part.
Zak, Sounds like fun. Let me know when you win and get your railroad up and running. If I win the lottery I am going to buy a 40’ intermodal container and have it customized like an RV and have windows installed so I can ship myself around the country.
Docster, Sorry, that’s a little bit beyond me.
Those prices seem low compared to what we were told when I started with the railroad.
Class 1s nowadays lease their power under long term leases - so they don’t have to worry about things like depreciation etc.
Smaller railroads such as shortlines and regionals tend to buy or lease older used engines, especially EMD SD40-2 or geeps, since they are cheaper than buying a brand new GE or EMD. It’d probably take awhile longer for SD60s and higher to end up on the used market, except for ex UP SD90MACs powered by EMD’s unsuccessful 256H, and I doubt a shortline would want one of those.
