Most railroads had cars assigned to company sand service for delivering sand to locomotive services locations. Where did they get the sand? Was it all purchased from one location on the system or from several locations? Did the sand cars ever go off line and if so how far?
Most sandservice cars were M/W that were not up to standards so did not go off line. This means the rr had to have a source online - sand pit or other access. If they had to go offline, it would be in a regular interchange car and you wouldn’t know it was locomotive sand.
